There has been shockingly little coverage of the American regime’s demands for access to personal data on New Zealanders.

MPs need to be tabling written PQs and demanding information in question time.

Yeah, I could be keen, depending on commitment, and as a Royals fan I’d come prepared to lose.

My impression is that the mainstream sociological explanation is that neoliberal globalization harmed the working class in a way that encouraged them to turn from centre-left unionism to right populism. That’s not the primary argument they were making, but their concerns seem to be vindicated.

The Long Heat is finally out from @versobooks.bsky.social today:

It deals with inter alia the promise of climate reversal, climate tipping points, the political economy of carbon removal and the very many antinomies of solar geoengineering.

Insurance in the Polycrisis | Kate Mackenzie & Tim Sahay The future is triage on an uninsurable earth.

NEW: Insurance in the Polycrisis @katemac.bsky.social & I

On the twentieth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, those who are devalued, displaced, and disinvested already know what the future on an uninsurable earth looks like for the beautiful and the damned.

In the back of my mind I’ve always worried that this was intentional: that unless you’ve first learned to be a small cog in the policy machine your expert knowledge isn’t actually wanted.

I want to know the backstory on who did the art covering this thing and whether they knew what it was going to be used for.

The town of Kier shows up as "Kier PE" in addresses seen in the show, but PE isn't a real state abbreviation. I second the upstate New York (Great Awakening) vibes.

And on top of that “good soldierism” is rampant, so senior faculty and lower level admins will defer to “the institution” and avoid doing anything that someone higher up hasn’t explicitly approved. Knowing your place > acting on principle.

But also, the NSF Political Science program gets singled out most.

That raises the possibility that they don’t know what social science is, they just want to make sure “liberal professors” don’t get money to talk about politics.

Social science often produces knowledge that challenges the assumptions and preferences of the governing elite.

Or maybe it’s that you don’t need social science if “there’s no such thing as society.”
