Management accounting, different story. Relevant costs, including opportunity costs, are tracked against incremental revenues in scenarios with forecast assumptions. Typically focus on impact to cash. E.g. -$500 at year 0, +$x in each of year 1-5. Discount at company cost of capital to reflect TVM.

Amortization expense is not a spreadsheet trick. If I spend $500 on rights that will last 5 years, this is an asset that helps me make money over 5 years. At the end of year 1, my rights asset is reduced by $100 and I report $100 of amortization expense, relating to revenue generated from rights.
