The Ivanpah Solar Power Facility power tower is creating misty rays
Just past Primm is the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility. As we were driving past it today on the road home the heat was producing misty rays emanating from the power tower. It was kind of spectacular, actually.

When Vegas was trying to be family friendly, Caesars Palace built an attraction at the Forums called Race For Atlantis. I was the lead animator on it. I had to hand animate Atlantis being destroyed as this was before physics simulations were a practical thing. Anyway, this is where it was in '98.
In '02 I was animating on The Sum of All Fears and there was a montage that needed one more scene. With almost no time (or budget) I built this model at home in Studio Max and animated it in R&H's homegrown software. A guy named James Atkinson lit it. We did it in a week and I still love it.
Oh no, we did it all by hand. My son spread rice out on the paper and traced the continent, and then I took his notes and drew all the details in. I scanned it and used photoshop to add the text!
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The countries of Zaeliah, a map we made based on tracing a pile of rice. It was heavily influenced by the Lord of the Rings maps.
My son has a love of D&D. He ran a campaign that lasted the first three years of high school, and he had this idea for a zombie apocalypse. He read about making a map using rice and tracing it, but didn't know where to after that. So, he gave me some doodles, and I made this map for him.

If you've never eaten at Marugame Monzo in downtown Los Angeles, you don't know what you're missing. This illustration is in the window at the counter where they make their own noodles. It's one of my favorite places to sit, especially when they're cutting the noodles. Lunch and a show!

As we were cleaning up our clothes closet today I rediscovered this shirt we got a year before Rhythm & Hues filed for bankruptcy. This place really was the best studio I ever worked for. After we won the Oscar for our work on Life of Pi and I was let go I was lucky enough to be a stay at home Dad.
Also, I don't *feel* old. The only clue that I am in my fifties is that a lot of things hurt.
I'll throw this out there... Does anyone know of any airbrush classes in the Los Angeles area? I have an airbrush. I have paints. I have model kits that need painting.
But I have no experience, a lot of anxiety and I want to learn how to use them.
