A new town named after a beloved and popular Briton? Look no further than Radcliffe.
September 1994: A fantastic request in the Wanted section of CF 48’s small ads. Wonder if he found one? 🙏🏻
I thought I’d have a look at some Vic 20 games - a machine I have never explored before. What are some good websites and games to start with?
Hi, if you like Commodore Format I also write about old games and magazines more broadly on my Substack! I would love you to subscribe. 🙌
A new unreleased Commodore 64 game preserved today with our release of Cavey - a 1992 budget platformer sadly never to be, and which featured a built-in level editor. Plenty of promise and its a huge shame it never got further! Source code included too!

After 35 years I thought I’d give the Exile manual a read 😂
I will come back to this later in the week, but what a game. Once you know what you’re doing!
I take a look at Rockford - The Arcade Game on the Commodore 64, a conversion of an arcade licence featuring the character from Boulder Dash, properly licenced from First Star. Was it any good or an Icon Design C64 botch job? Find out here:

This could actually be level 2 of Creatures!
Been playing Cyberdyne Warrior. It’s cool to see graphics and sound which hint at - and were sometimes refined for - the Rowlands brothers’ next game, Creatures. ❤️
Yeah. It’s one of those that actually becomes more playable with at least infinite lives on.
Bart versus the Space Mutants is tough, and the time limit stops you exploring as much as you might. Which is a shame ‘cos it’s packed with humour and Easter eggs. You can use a coin to call Moe’s Tavern, for example. ❤️
I’ll be playing these old games - and the hundreds of new ones - forever, I think. At 47 it’s probably never going to leave me (or the thousands of others that make this beautiful new machine possible).
It does seem to be a recurring issue from what I’ve read yeah 😩 I’m gonna have a look at those clear ones, thanks!
Yeah, this is the “better” one that came with the Maxi. Has micro switches. Having done a bit of researching, this isn’t an unusual thing to happen. It’s snapped back in place now (weirdly after I removed the red collar part), but obviously that’s not how it’s meant to be.
This happened to my micro switch joystick for TheC64…anything worth doing to save it? It hasn’t snapped, just detached. Still works but keeps falling off.
💅
Only took about 35 years 😂😂 Absolutely in bits that the final boss,
the fabled Shadow of the Beast, is a toenail 💀
The loss of the magazine ritual still hits me deep.
Really lovely piece with Sean.
Some days I just can't believe it's been 35 years.
At times I can even still clearly remember the smell of the magazine and the excitement of reading a new issue...
..and then getting up from my desk chair, I suddenly groan.
So yeah, it probably has been 35 years 😆
❤️ It’s now 35 years since issue 1 of CF went on sale 😱
👌🏻 In one of our personal favourite pieces from the Archive, deputy editor Sean Masterson tells us about the road to launch:

Transfer deadline day.
We were saying, how much must that pub have missed Future’s staff’s business when it moved on?
📍 Monmouth Street, Bath, England.
A stack of CF mags.
A stack of CF mags.
A stack of CF mags.
My original (obviously!) collection of #CommodoreFormat mags from the early 90s. Issues 1 through 20, I am curiously missing issues 21, 22 and 23, then I have 24 through 33. Where the prittle jar of doom dada dun day are those three? 👀 Bizarre Inc. indeed. #C64 magazine treasure!
From over on X
It’s all very authentic, at least 😄
18 months later Hulk was back - the first character to appear on a CF cover more than once (the only other one’s Mayhem!).
Definitely one of his more unusual fights.
