👋 👋 SSE members, I hope you'll join me May 21 for the virtual SSE Presidential Symposium:
Navigating Uncertainty: Individual Resilience and Collective Action in Evolutionary Biology
Pls RT to help get the word out!
We (with @dornhaus.bsky.social) finally wrote up our class on how to teach modeling to biologists, which ends up being a non-trivial exercise in understanding the roles that theory plays in the scientific method. We hope others will use our class, or simply enjoy the manuscript!
1. In a landmark ruling, the Montana Supreme Court has declared that the constitution, one of the most progressive in the nation, entirely protects transgender people.
The ruling is even insulated from SCOTUS decisions, due to how state constitutions work.

On his way to steal yo girl
(Provided yo girl is a tan-morph female White-throated Sparrow, since each sex of this species has two morphs that mate disassortatively and function like genders with associated behavioral differences.)
The Social Lives of Viruses is coming to Vancouver, Canada, from 4th-8th August 2026!

From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.
Octavia E. Butler, 1998:
Congratulations to Péter Magyar on a decisive election victory in Hungary.
The Hungarian people have chosen a new path. We are ready to work with you, and our European allies, to deepen our cooperation in trade, defence, and security.
OK JD now do Putin
Photo of the four astronauts hugging inside Inspire, words on the bottom say “Artemis has helped crystallize one big theme. I’m tired of wars. I’m tired of lies. I’m tired of these shitty pathetic men wasting humanities time. I’m tired of the worshipping of money. I’m tired of the corruption. The indecency. The cruelty. I’m tired of all the fakery. The sadism. The abuse. The cowardice. The obnoxious narcissism. The shameful and disgraceful criminality. They are at the end of this run. *we want to be caring humans again. We want to dream again. We want to live.*
We needed this moment of collective joy.

In preparation for the next iteration of my data science class, I've made many updates to our #JuliaLang species distribution package. There's now a "Getting started" tutorial that, I think, is pretty good, and is meant to get you started within 20 minutes!

In an age of creeping relativism, a universal moral law still exists.
Threatening to end an entire civilization of 90 million people in order to bend a nation’s conduct to your will is grossly morally wrong. It is evil. And we should say this loudly.
Stop what you're doing and look 🌍
The full globe? That is the NIGHT SIDE. I'm pretty sure I can see some satellites/debris glinting away on the periphery. Also the Aurora?!
What a bonkers beautiful world that supports and holds everyone and everything you've ever known and loved, and so much more.
OK I now see what you mean--so either the whole side towards the camera needs to be in full shade or in full sun. I've found a few other images online that are close (e.g. Apollo 8), but you are right they aren't as completely round and full. Neat!
Weren't there were nine (or so) crewed Apollo missions to the moon (not all landing, some just flyby), such that they would have also seen the full round face of Earth?
You are certainly right that this is very special, and the first time since Apollo 17. :)
We’ve been talking in our lab meetings about sexual conflict and sexual dimorphism, and have some thoughts. What if animal genomes are far more sex-specific and less cosntrained than we assume? @linley-sherin.bsky.social pulled it all together here www.zoology.ubc.ca/mank-lab/pdf... 1/n
Very excited to announce our new review accepted at Phil. Trans. B. (in press)!
This project started after a journal club I presented this time last year (!) sparked some lab discussions and it's been so much fun seeing it become a paper. Big thanks to all my co-authors for making it happen :)

In July, we will teach the 3rd biodiversity genomics course in Latin America, this time in Bogotá, following the COLEVOL meeting. We invite applications from students, postdocs and PIs from Latin America interested in learning how to analyse genomic data. biodiversitygenomicslatam.weebly.com
New preprint! We sequenced 175 'Alalā (Hawaiian crow) genomes to understand why >50% of eggs fail to hatch in a species recovered from just 9 individuals. What we found was a both exciting and surprising. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
In addition to the comments of @brendanoloughlin.bsky.social , if your data can be used to estimate depth of nodes, then ILS should tend to have deeper coalescent times, because the variation was there in the common ancestor. Recent introgression could lead to shallow coalescent times.
Comparison of maxent and logistic models
Do you like Maxent? You can now use it within SpeciesDistributionToolkit.jl 🎉
We have also added a bunch of dataviz functions, including bivariate and value-suppressing maps. Oh, and conformal prediction for uncertainty quantification. And more coming soon.

Our paper is on the cover of @currentbiology.bsky.social : a strawberry poison frog with the most common color morph, living up to its common name 🍓. In this issue, we uncover the genetic basis of color variation in frogs from Bocas del Toro, where blue, green, yellow, orange, and red morphs occur
If you've done the work necessary, then you have actually earned it. (although feeling that way may be another thing)
