US birth rates dropped 72% among 15–19-y.o.s, but increased 83% among 45-54 y.o.s

This is extraordinary: the drop in US birth rates is driven entirely by younger women www.nytimes.com/2026/04/09/u... To the extent that it reflects younger Americans taking control of their fertility, temporarily declining birth rates may well be something worth celebrating!

This is my most European-imperialist belief: outside shoes inside is gross.

Neocons got everything they ever wanted and they're miserable, just watching it all collapse under the weight of its own contradictions. The most galling part must be the fact that their opponents are now also just watching it all collapse under the weight of its own contradictions...

Haha these people are morbidly unable to think through the consequences of their beliefs

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

Some thoughts about the President of the United States speaking about ending a civilization. The president speaks genocide. Anyone who has been involved in that conversation or associated actions would be complicit. And so we too must speak. Not only about crimes, but about their legal punishment.

Wouldn’t a fee on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz be broadly speaking equivalent to a carbon tax? That would be humiliating for Trump but not such a bad thing for the rest of us, all told #EconSky

Democrats should announce today that they will join the ICC and extradite Americans guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity asap once they’re back in power. This is almost literally the least they can do.

Yes, ignoring those crimes is how we got here. Let’s go.

Everyone should call for the US to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) and to ratify the Rome Statute, and for the prosecution of everyone involved in this campaign of war crimes.

My disdain for the people who have the power to stop the lunatic-in-charge but don’t knows no bounds. *They* don’t have the excuse of being dementia-ridden whack jobs with one foot in the grave.

Even worse: none of the people with the power to stop him are doing anything

I always keep a bottle of champagne in the fridge for this sort of thing. But a tuxedo in the closet is a good complement.

Glad they fixed the space toilet bc it’s probably the only area the female astronaut can have to herself from time to time.
