In Vienna's Maria Am Gestade church there is a Baroque painting of the Crucifixion, mourners to the left, instigators to the right, the latter including a man wearing a jewelled headband. He is Vlad Tepes (the Impaler), a Wallachian king whose battlefield exploits inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Austrians celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th. Traced back to the 4th century Bishop of Myra in Turkey, he rewards good children with gifts, whilst his opposite number, the devilish Krampus, deals with the naughty ones! Both appear in chocolate form in Vienna's sweet shops.
