A recent paper by Huang Wu et al. describes results from a large-scale analysis that addressed this challenge, uncovering new insights into genomic differences among plant species that can be used to improve current DNA-based methods for plant species identification:

The genomes and life histories of plants are often complex, and this can make telling plant species apart using standard DNA barcodes challenging 🌱🧬

Good timing! The feature on @biogeneurope.bsky.social that #CORDIS has just published is a great way to see where our 2nd act - Biodiversity Genomics Europe Plus (starting in May) comes from: cordis.europa.eu/article/id/4... @iboleurope.bsky.social @ergabiodiv.bsky.social @eurotaxonomy.cetaf.org
Our next community meeting will happen on 30 March, with talks on:
🤖FAIR assessment tools' biodiversity-specific requirements
⛰️high-mountain grasslands transformation in the 🇺🇦 Carpathians
🎨 initiatives exploring the interface between science & art

🆕 The @biogeneurope.bsky.social project - which now gives way to BGE+ - represented a landmark in European research collaboration, bringing together the #DNAbarcoding (@iboleurope.bsky.social) and #reference #genomes (@ergabiodiv.bsky.social) communities.

What is biodiversity? What is genomics? How do they work together to support species monitoring & conservation? 🌍🧬

As the #Biodiversity #Genomics #Europe @biogeneurope.bsky.social project concludes today it is fantastic to see zenodo.org/records/1878... the 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐥𝐞𝐭 out! A joint effort of the @ergabiodiv.bsky.social and @iboleurope.bsky.social Communities!
It was a great opportunity for us to discuss ways of developing the respective communities, aligning intents and objectives, while the EDNAEurope core group also discussed governance & strategy.
The Workshop was made possible by @biogeneurope.bsky.social.
In early February, we had a joint workshop with representatives of the core group of EDNAEurope, which took place at @naturalis.bsky.social.

How not to love a workshop that has among its goals "to reduce fear and disgust from bugs"?
Kudos to the organisers of "Biodiversity under our feet" – we need to know the diversity of life populating the soil!

Our experience in @biogeneurope.bsky.social suggests that we need to go beyond "project-level thinking" for biodiversity genomics in Europe, and that is exactly what we have started to do today at @naturalis.bsky.social! @horizoneu.bsky.social @ergabiodiv.bsky.social @iboleurope.bsky.social

BGE is done sampling! 🥳
All over Europe scientists and citizen scientists took samples for BGE. Those samples needed to be transported to a lab for research, travelling thousands of kilometers. And that's not easy!

The final presentation will be on the BGE paper “Empowering national capacity for DNA-based approach to species identification and biodiversity monitoring,” by Elizavet Kaitetzidou (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and Michał Grabowski (University of Łódź).
Also, Samuel Vanden Abele (Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences) will present @bopco-be.bsky.social, a species identification unit jointly run by the Institute of Natural Sciences and the Africa Museum.
The first community meeting of the year will happen on 26 January!
We'll be joined by Amber Hartman Scholz (Leibniz-Institut DSMZ), who will discuss the BBNJ Treaty, including Marine Genetic Resources & the requirements for fair & equitable sharing of benefits.
