I’m an old white guy myself, and these people really grind my gears. They seem furious at the everything because they got old, and therefore seem absolutely determined to screw up the country for succeeding generations.
Probably, for comfortably off old white racists with triple locked pensions cheaply bought houses and BUPA, it won’t get much worse at all. For the young, and non-whites, and LGBQT people, and the NHS, and the environment, it can get a lot fucking worse.
My strongest book memory from childhood was laughing out loud in a restaurant reading “Bored of the Rings” by the Harvard Lampoon, a peerless parody written by people with an obvious fondness for, and knowledge of, Tolkien. 😁
Have to say, I gave up on Shannara pretty quickly (never bothered getting the second book). Absolutely agree about the Earthsea trilogy, it’s a masterpiece although personally I found the latest one very disappointing.
For me they did. The first real novels I read were things like The Hobbit, the Foundation series, lots of Arthur C. Clarke, Heinlein Zelazny etc, and I’m still reading lots of Sci Fi and Fantasy more then fifty years later.
Oh, you’re just setting out on the Tyrant Philosophers series! I envy you, I’d love to read them all for the first time again, if you see what I mean. 🤔
