In February 1777, General George Washington ordered the first mass immunization campaign in American history by mandating that his troops be inoculated against smallpox. He protected the Continental Army from an epidemic that was deadlier than British forces.

249 years later, we have this idiot.

Wait till they find out that alcohol is derived from an Arabic word. They‘ll probably try to rename it ‘Freedom Juice’.

Local elections in Essex: what are the parties promising? Elections are being held across Essex on 7th May. What are the parties offering the voters?

All seats are up in Essex County Council this May.
We invited every major party to set out their plans.
Three stayed silent.
Two didn’t.

Then by all means don’t watch it. Personally I have continued to thoroughly enjoy the MCU since Endgame, and the most recent films, Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four, have been excellent, as have Daredevil and Wonder Man on TV. If you disagree, fine, it’s not compulsory.

OMFG I had to go and check that this ACTUALLY happened.

Since when does the BBC ever do chyrons with a political party's branding, rather than their own? Not to mention this is during a pre-election campaign purdah.

Genetic clues tell the story of Neanderthals' decline — New Scientist The Neanderthal population shrank during a cold spell around 75,000 years ago, and the loss of genetic diversity may have contributed to their eventual extinction

More interesting genetic insights into the dwindling of the Neanderthals - with their population contracting during an ice age, rallying again, before they finally disappear (some having blended into the expanding modern human population)

I’d sooner just enjoy the stark beauty of the footage, and leave flat Earthers to wallow in their sad, strange, paranoid little headspace.

There really isn’t any point, I’m afraid. Flat Earthers live in a bizarre fantasy world where billions is being spent, and reams of evidence is being manufactured, just to convince them, for some never really discussed reason, that the planet is flat.

Ossoff: "How does American politics really work? It's coin operated. Money goes in, favors come out. It's been running on secret money, corporate money, billionaire money ... all of this gave rise to a depraved president who exploits this rot to empower and enrich himself"

@NotAvgLiberal
Just read it.

Spot On -

An Aussie reply to Trump’s rant about ‘NATO not being there for us’:

“Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage.

You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail.

Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates.

Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you.

Oh, of course. Like the Industrial Revolution led to an end to scarcity for everyone. Oh no wait….it actually led to the Gilded Age, with an obscenely wealthy few living high off the sweat and poverty everyone else.

More corruption in the Trump Era. Nail down anything of value while these thugs are in office.

I’m an old white guy myself, and these people really grind my gears. They seem furious at the everything because they got old, and therefore seem absolutely determined to screw up the country for succeeding generations.

Probably, for comfortably off old white racists with triple locked pensions cheaply bought houses and BUPA, it won’t get much worse at all. For the young, and non-whites, and LGBQT people, and the NHS, and the environment, it can get a lot fucking worse.

My strongest book memory from childhood was laughing out loud in a restaurant reading “Bored of the Rings” by the Harvard Lampoon, a peerless parody written by people with an obvious fondness for, and knowledge of, Tolkien. 😁

Have to say, I gave up on Shannara pretty quickly (never bothered getting the second book). Absolutely agree about the Earthsea trilogy, it’s a masterpiece although personally I found the latest one very disappointing.

For me they did. The first real novels I read were things like The Hobbit, the Foundation series, lots of Arthur C. Clarke, Heinlein Zelazny etc, and I’m still reading lots of Sci Fi and Fantasy more then fifty years later.

Oh, you’re just setting out on the Tyrant Philosophers series! I envy you, I’d love to read them all for the first time again, if you see what I mean. 🤔

Just finished ‘Children of Strife’. Really excellent, (although I found the idea of a group of narcissistic, cruel, and selfish billionaires completely fucking up a planet completely unbelievable)

DON'T COME HERE.

They kidnap people off the streets & throw them in filthy holes.

They don’t care who you are.

They don't care if you're white, either, if you think that'll save you.

They have quotas.

(It’s all about money.)

THE US IS NOT SAFE.

STAY AWAY.

Yikes! Always something…

We better wake up to what’s happening online. The right isn’t just posting anymore; they’re scaling influence with AI.

📌 AI-generated pro-Trump “influencers” are surging on social media and are starting to shape what people see and believe.

On any given day, you might as well roll a die to predict whether Donald Trump is going to claim total victory; imminent victory; a negotiated ceasefire; an imminent ceasefire; new attacks; crucial negotiations or imminent crucial negotiations. The only certainty is that he’ll be lying.

Ring Necked Parakeets have been thriving in London since the late 1960s. There’s many urban legends about how they got there: escaped from Jimmi Hendrix’ flat, or from the set of The African Queen, or from George Michael’s secret aviary. Most likely they are descendant of lots of escaped pets.

Will voters EVER understand the big lie about "scary democratic (small D) socialist policies?!" Bernie has told us for decades, and Mamdani is showing us now. We can instantly fund a WAR but have TO DEBATE for decades about healthcare for all - GEEZUS!
They've LIED TO US FOR PROFIT for decades.
