A stunning photograph captures Edinburgh Castle perched atop a rocky crag during golden hour, bathed in warm sunset light that highlights its stone towers and battlements. A vibrant rainbow arcs gracefully across the blue sky directly above the castle, stretching from left to right. In the foreground, narrow cobblestone streets in the Old Town feature old brick and stone buildings with lit street lamps, arched doorways, stairs leading up a hill, bare winter trees, some greenery, and a distant figure in light clothing walking nearby.

La mort des amants …

VI.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

War in Iran: Europe's complicit silence on international law European reluctance to condemn the Israeli-American intervention in Iran flies in the face of the continent's values. No one can believe that Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump's goal is to defend the interests of the Iranian people.

Loss of Infectivity of Influenza Virus and SARS-CoV-2 during Aerosol Sampling Our understanding of transmission of influenza virus and other respiratory viruses is limited by the difficulty of detecting infectious viruses in aerosol particles. Most aerosol sampling methods are believed to contribute to virus inactivation, but the magnitude of this sampling artifact is unknown. To investigate this question, we aerosolized influenza A virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2 suspended in human saliva into a small chamber (3.7 L). Aerosols settled for 10 min onto either cells or a thin layer of liquid medium that was immediately transferred to cells for plaque assay. Aerosols that deposited directly onto cells led to the formation of 100× more plaque forming units (PFU) compared to aerosols that deposited first into liquid medium. Further experiments ruled out uneven aerosol distribution in the chamber or inefficient virus recovery as causes of this discrepancy. These findings indicate that aerosolized IAV and SARS-CoV-2 lost infectivity by approximately 2 log10 PFU within ∼10 min unless they attached to cells quickly. As natural infection via inhalation occurs by direct deposition of the virus onto cells, we hypothesize that sampling directly onto cells more accurately reflects the potential for exposure to lead to infection.

Our latest paper shows that most aerosol sampling methods may underestimate infectious virus in air. We observed 100x more infectious flu virus and SARS-CoV-2 if it deposited directly on cells (more realistic) rather than in liquid first and then transferred to cells. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

No meta-analytical effect of economic inequality on well-being or mental health - Nature A meta-analysis of 168 studies reveals that economic inequality is not significantly associated with subjective well-being or mental health.

Surprisingly, people psychologically tolerate inequality, as long as their own economic security is intact. Psychological harm resulted from inequality only emerges when it interacts with personal vulnerability, incl. low income, unstable resources, or high inflation.

The Palestine Day: the struggle for freedom, sovereignty, and humanity is far from over. My support stands firmly with those who seek a life free from occupation, fear, and dispossession. Justice for Palestine is not a slogan; it is a moral commitment to uphold humanity wherever it is threatened. 🇵🇸

In 1884, pioneers like Edison, Bell, Hamilton met to form a professional body for electrical engineering. On 7–8 October, the AIEE held its first meeting at the International Electrical Exhibition in Philadelphia, supported by Tesla, Thomson, Weston, whose collective work later shaped the IEEE.
