10 years ago... I lost my friend Phife (ATCQ) in March, then a few weeks later I lost my hero, my everything, my Dad.... then here comes April π... then December (George Michael).. 2016 was an awful year.
Tomorrow marks 10 years since Prince passed. For the first time, I gathered nearly two decadesq of my writing, podcasts, talks & more into one curated resource, including playlists, rarities, a review of every video he ever made, and collaborations I did with his estate. anildash.com/2026/04/20/p...

This shit is hard but Iβm going to find some joy in life.
I'd originally hoped the title track would be a cover of Donny Hathaway's "Tryin' Times." And it's not at all. Yet what Blake delivers instead feels curated, honest, measured, organic, and worth the $40 I smacked down for the lightning white vinyl pressing. I'd rate it at LEAST 4 stars. ββββ
I'd dare say there are no skips to be found. "Death of Love" and "I Had a Dream She Took My Hand" do good work representing as lead singles. Having experienced my own grief recently, I was primed to enjoy the foggy, coastal pallor that I've come to expect from a new James Blake record.
It's heavy on the melancholy, melodic tunes comprised of ambient electronica with trap influences, but then gives way to a throwback soft rock sound in its middle third. Though the sounds couldn't be more different, they both complement Blake's captivatingly fragile falsetto.
On the cover of James Blake's Trying Times album, he appears in shadow attempting to keep about 6 plates spinning on poles.
Every time James Blake puts out a new album, I buy it on vinyl. The last one, Playing Robots Into Heaven, was a magnificent return to form. But this year's Trying Times... might actually end up being my favorite one yet.
Finally someone agrees with me. π
