Really grim to see the little real time stock ticker going up next to Alphabet's name within the article about how their product drove someone to suicide.
It's hard to even know what they're mad about. Carhartt is pretty famously a work wear brand. Is he fake for wearing Carhartt while interacting with city workers? Or, is he elitist for paying the tens of extra dollars it would cost to customize such a jacket?
I walked out of Oppenheimer because of the noise. Absolutely painful.
I don't know how you got past the first paragraph! It's infuriatingly disingenuous
I feel this so much. I often get this sense that much of my 20s was wasted, then I am reminded of how much I needed to unlearn before I could make any forward progress. Could I be further along? Technically, yes, but it does me no good to chart a course from places I've never been.
Given this new information, has anyone considered just giving him a Greenland poster to hang on his wall?
"My AI girlfriend is so quirky. She loves it when we go out and collect training data for modeling commercial HVAC systems together."
Yes, the fridge, independently wants to help you shop for groceries. It worked its way up from the mini fridge line, sat in the corner of so many board meetings, just keeping sodas cold and biding it's time...A true triumph of the silicon spirit!
Beyond the logistical hurdles of ethically navigating such development, a key value proposition would likely break: that a person could create their own little masterpiece without investing significant time and effort. The very time and effort that give art the soul to which I previously referred.
There may be a world in which the balancing forces could exist to prevent the worst of the environmental harms, and to ensure ethically sourced data, and to safeguard end users and bystanders. I do not believe ours is that world. In that world, this could not be quite the boom industry it is today.
I'm not opposed to new forms of art, or technology. But, how can you separate an inherently extractive technology from the issues of capitalism? To build his first printing press, Gutenberg did not first have to go steal every book from the library.
And, when the localized and global impact of these costs are fully realized in the decades to come, what will we have to show for it? Doodads in our pockets that spit out soulless simulacra of art, while a handful of equally soulless people sit atop piles of wealth too large for the mind to fathom.
These tools will not turn our world into some Ghibliesque dreamscape. They are purpose built to capture revenue that would have otherwise gone to artists, and at the cost of unjustifiable use of power, water, and land.
This comes close to the point in recognizing that AI could not exist without ingesting a vast array of images, primarily without permission or compensation, it is too credulous in repeating the idea that this is some benevolent tool to bring art to the masses.
This is beautifully written. Thank you
Can you provide other examples of tools and methods you are thinking of here? Or, are you specifically thinking only of LLMs, with ChatGPT as shorthand?
"Blueberry pie recipe"
"Bluebburrby pie recipe"
"Bbluebery pie recipe -glue"
"Blubeberry pie recipe no glue +edible"
"Write me a story about someone who grew up loving blueberries in the summertime and learned how to make a delicious blueberry pie and tells you how to make it at the end"
All of these are valuable food sources in a healthy ecosystem. But they sure do pose a serious threat to human health.
Thanks for adding context. I had to see it mentioned a couple more times before I realized this was the name in question. So, for anyone else who feels extra out of the loop, if you scrolled past this phrase with no hint of recognition, you didn't know who it was either.
Amazing! I've been thinking about how display my smaller collection of teaware, and this is inspiring!
Three women stand in front of a yellow patterned background. They all wear different colors in a matching pattern. In front of them the title of the show Good Girls Revolt appears
I didn't see any mention of Good Girls Revolt but it felt like it was still picking up steam at the end of it's only season. Also, I have to second Scavenger's Reign, because I knew it was cancelled going in and I still grieved the loss.
The one consistent thing I've heard in every story about a trip to Ireland is how great the people are. You couldn't find a more effective way to distance yourself from that good reputation if you tried.
I tried sitting in on an open jam around a campfire. I didn't play very well, but everyone was very gracious and welcoming.
I also once recorded a long session on my modular synth where I was manipulating a new sample and I was so proud of how it turned out, but I plugged the line into the wrong jack on my recorder. So the onboard mic picked it up so quietly and me plugging and unplugging patch cables so loudly!
I did the same the but I hadn't loaded the film properly and I didn't realize until the film didn't stop advancing when it should have.
Ah, I see it now. Checkmate, science, I guess...
Admittedly I may be biased, as my cartography background assumes a geoid Earth, but I'm confused by the decision to mark the equator on a flat earth map. I shudder to think of what mental gymnastics one must use to explain daylight/weather patterns on this plane of existence.
