she may not be Fujimoto’s ultimate character but I think Fumiko is his thesis on his philosophy that characters are devices used to convey narrative intention above all else.
She can be anywhere, in any role, with any amount of knowledge needed to speak to the meaning of the scene that she’s in.
Fumiko is not an individual character with a set background, goal and driving force that runs along a character arc. She has whatever backstory, whatever motivations, fears and hopes, are needed to narratively complete the scene.
She always sides with the winner- the flow of the story itself.
I love the moments when she looks “at the camera”. A sort of nod to the idea that she’s aware of her role as a character in this work, of what part she needs to play in the immediate scene she’s been cast within.

Every time you see a retelling of someone playing Caves of Qud it seems like one of those stories where no sentence has any connection to the previous sentence. But after you play the game you kinda just think shit like "yeah, that makes sense but you could have avoided that by growing another face"
