“Do not look for the Buddha elsewhere.”
The real work is to change our own mind
#RealBuddhaQuotes with Venerable Thubten Chodron
This May, join Venerable Thubten Chodron and the monastic community at Sravasti Abbey — or online — for the resounding of The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines
Part of an ongoing research project, the presentation offers a glimpse into how translation choices continue to inform the way texts are understood, adapted, and lived.
Through close reading, it traces how a single translated image—“ocean” rendered as “great glacial lake”—came to shape interpretations of Vairocana in Tibetan Buddhist thought.
The talk explores how the Buddhāvataṃsakasūtra—so influential in East Asia—was translated and received in Tibet, with particular attention to its presence in Nyingtik literature.
#OnOurRadar: 84000 associate translator Ana Cristina Lopes will present “Whither the Buddhāvataṃsakasūtra in Tibet? Notes on translation and reception” at the Numata Center for Buddhist Studies on April 16, 2026.
