Tonic immobility aka "playing dead" can happen when an exhausted bat feels threatened. It's one way to make a predator lose interest. This little guy doesn't yet know I'm his friend. #yougotafriendinme #batcare #lovebats

Bat care can be hard but it can be brilliant too.
Beautiful ♂️ noctule bat came in two days ago, found with torn wing membrane. Fed himself from a dish on night 1, gaining weight and has started healing process already (new white skin along edge). Go on bro, make my job easy 😊#lovebats #batcare

More than 30 years a bat carer and almost fooled last night by a bat playing dead. I watched, waited, turned him over, poked him. Finally put him on table, turned to see him trundling across. This morning he's had a bit of mealworm and even tried a flutter to my slipper. 🤞🏽for Lazarus 🥰🦇🤞🏽🤞🏽

30 volunteers covered 199 bat calls over 5,000 square kilometres of Northern England in 2025. I love them all, they respond with enthusiasm and good humour to enable bats to be given a second chance. Merry Christmas and may all bats stay safely tucked up for the New Year. #lovebats #batcare

Bats can find themselves in need of help at any time of year. This little guy is call number 197 for 2025. He is pretty miserable, cold and weak but already responding well to our offer of B&B for the holiday season..... #lovebats #batcare #batsareforchristmas

🦇A new episode of our podcast, BatChat, is out now - The Hoffman Kiln: Where Bats Reclaim the Dales.

North of Settle in the Yorkshire Dales lies the Hoffman Kiln, a relic of the industrial revolution. It's now an important site for bats of the Dales all year round.

🦇 Bat box scheme in old quarry phenomenally successful for pipistrelle sp. and has also attracted occasional long-eared bats. But yesterday we all did happy dances when we found a Noctule bat in a "small hollow" box, 4.5m up beech tree, good flight lines. #lovebats #greenwoodsecohabitats

A bat we ringed 20 years ago. Study long since over, data analysed, published, a small chapter in a bigger story. We all moved on to new challenges, new jobs. To us it's history.
But this wee fella gets on with life, still doing what he did then. Surviving in a world we are fast turning upside down.

A ringed Natterer’s bat in hibernation

A ringed Natterer’s bat in hibernation

Massive influx of Natterer’s bats at valley level marks the official start of hibernation season (last week they were still swarming). And the cherry on top was the return of Z0266, a bat ringed as an adult in 2005. That makes four 21+ year old 🦇 still turning up ( @johnaltringham.bsky.social )

Dinky little long eared bat thought he'd found a great winter roost behind a disused loo at a heritage site in Cumbria. He was unexpectedly uncovered during work, came into care for a check up and added 20% to his weight in two days. Such a sweetie, he goes home tonight. #lovebats #batcare 🦇🥰

Oh yes he took a while to recover but was fat and fluffy when released after 8 days in care. #lovebats #batcare 🥰🦇

As winter approaches, bats are less active but our team doesn't rest as long as there are bats that need help. This tiny bat found on rail platform, caked in black grease and very weak. Though situation improved he is not out of the woods yet. But he found his voice & appetite. #lovebats #batcare 🦇🤞
