Long story short I'm writing a woman in her 60s with empty nest syndrome, a wife light years away, a sometimes flirtation with a palm sized canine antique shop owner, and a teaching position in Midwestern Reorganization Studies at U of M Dearborn in the 22nd century.

A disquiet that seems unnervingly not merely confined to the Sol system.

Many are optimistic among older generations; the slow agonies of resource wars and the hard years of reorganization into communes and functional state systems ended after one final terror. The youth are priviledged to know aliens and see the stars in their grasp.

And yet there remains a disquiet.

There's an insistence it's a growing pain, a natural one given their premature, violent introduction to interstellar life thanks to the millions dead from the Skaku incursion of 2081. All societies take time, but learn to cooperate. And so Earthers wait. For how much longer, no one can say.

They bear aliens as citizens: a 700 strong population of 15 story Ursong bears in Siberia, and thousands of others across the globe, Alliance personnel included. Few now is the human who have not seen a Tigerian thundering down highways turned walkways, or an Owei flagging them down from knee high.

They're represented in the Alliance Assembly, as all worlds are, but it's clear they are the newcomers, and the government EarthFed runs is not always one the people trust, a structure made for convenience riddled with holes from the old world.

Humans cannot immediately join the Alliance fleet, pending a probationary period for pre FTL worlds, the same fleet in the sky. Their best and brightest are leaving en masse for civilian posts out in the Alliance, Earth Colonies, the Earth Transit Service.

The government that replaced what was left of old nation state alliances is mostly capable but clearly acquiescent to Alliance needs first, in exchange for valuable technologies and resources. Humans struggle the first twenty years with palm and building sized aliens alike.

But swaths are the town I grew up in made even more ubiquitous, areas of decay and environmental devastation slowly healing, their glory days long past, what's new within their limits seemingly just enticements to leave, or busywork for who remains.

It's a utopia; democratic, moneyless, with no hunger, no police in the traditional sense, no wars, less hate among humans than perhaps ever before. The atmosphere is scrubbed clean, the resources needed flow mostly freely. Humans live on the Moon, Mars, other planets. A fleet guards in orbit.

One thing I decided to nick from reading up on other creatives real world influences is that Earth of 2106 is a resilient society as its industries slowed and its nations crumbled, but it's treated at times like an antique shop, a curiousity of simpler times, and a place to leave for its youth.

Mirova in a hospital like bed and in chain with a group of hazmat like suited up scientist(?) beside her.
