I’m disgusted by the spineless and groveling comments from President Trump, Vice President Vance, and other members of the cabinet, who seem to want to turn Russia’s botched invasion into a victory for a war criminal. The truth is that Russia’s illegal invasion backfired because it brought NATO members even closer together. I saw this firsthand just this weekend, when I visited Finland—one of NATO’s newest members—to observe a joint exercise between members of the Virginia National Guard and the Finnish Army. U.S. support for Ukraine has severely degraded the threat posed to the U.S. by a major adversary, with zero cost in American lives. It demonstrates our support for democracy and international law, which Russia and China are desperate to undermine. The United States is safest when we stand with the free peoples of the world against those who would oppress them.
