Unbelievable- but yet believable given this administration’s deepening plutocracy.

Amazing study - I’m surprised the number isn’t even cheaper than 53%. Let’s stop with nuclear nonsense already.
It’s amazing how the lack of accountability in Georgia for Plant Vogtle has led to this moment. At least voters got rid of three Georgia PSC commissioners last November and at least Westinghouse and South Carolina utility executives went to jail. The rest of you follow our paths at your peril.
It’s sad to me how even philanthropic billionaires- few that there are - embrace nuclear power with no thought for the costs and risks to the rest of us. I’m really tired of being jerked around by these rich ass hats.
March 2026 was the hottest March in recorded history by a wide margin: a disturbing 9.35 F above 20th century norms. March's average temperature was 50.85 degrees Fahrenheit.
What is wrong with us? Or, I should say, what is wrong the climate change-denying Republicans?

Cost is not the only issue, but is still the critical path. Nuclear is unaffordable and I should know: Georgia is the only state that built nuclear in the last 3 decades and it was a financial disaster for us. Susie is right: renewables all the way.
How embarrassing for these idiots - or are they fossil fuel villains willing to destroy a livable planet for profits? Doesn’t matter. Trump has allowed them to slither out from under their rocks into mainstream influence and we are all worse off for it.

There is no preparation for such a thing. Drone attacks or any kind of attack on a nuclear power facility should be considered a war crime and it’s perpetrators put on trial.
I could not agree more. Look at what happened in Georgia: a 25% rate increase for just 1 GW of energy, the largest rate increase ever. And the political fall out continues.
Outstanding. Anyone that does nuclear energy in this era of cheap renewables and storage is doing it for profit, not for any other reason.
Outstanding. Anyone that does nuclear in this day of cheap renewables and storage is doing it for a profit, not for any other reason.
Fact #8: Although all partners were financially devastated from the cost overruns, it was particularly bad for Dalton Utilities whose customers owe $306 million for just 35.65 MWs of energy for their 1.6% share of Vogtle, an outrageous sum that should have cost the decision-makers their jobs.
Fact #7: Plant Vogtle had 4 partners, Ga Power at 45.7%, MEAG (Municipal Authority of GA for the munis) with 22.7%, Oglethorpe Power for the EMCs at 30%, and outlier Dalton Utilities, not anywhere close to the largest municipal utility in Georgia but nonetheless a partner with 1.6% of the project.
Not sure what else he could do to be truly horrifying evil. If we do nothing we are the same. So yes please push to remove Trump NOW
In fact, all the partners sued Georgia Power and Georgia Power sued them back. Meanwhile, Commissioner Tim Echols, who thankfully lost his seat last November, claimed the opposite in essays and to reporters - that partners "knew they were doing something hard and stuck with it no matter what".
Fact #6: nuclear proponents will often say that activists and litigation are what slows down nuclear construction and drives up costs, and there was indeed plenty of litigation - from partners suing Georgia Power to be released from their contracts because of the stunning cost overruns.
Fact #5: For the first several years of construction, Ga Power claimed repeatedly that the Vogtle project was "on time and on budget". In 2016, just months before Westinghouse would declare bankruptcy, Southern Co. CEO Tom Fanning said "it's going beautifully and we're on schedule" - clearly a lie.
A silver lining however small
What??!?! $7.5 billion is what Plant Vogtle cost Georgians. And that was a rip off. This is terrible.
Fact #4: May 1, 2024, 24 hours after Unit 4 went into commercial service (why wait?), Georgia Power raised residential rates a total of 25% to pay for their 45.7% share of the project. The timing couldn't have been worse: right before summer rates hit.
Fact #3: in the middle aughts (2004 - 2006) Georgia Power predicted a robust annual load growth rate of 4.1% that required new nuclear reactors to meet the demand. Not only did they not have 4.1% annual growth, they didn’t have 4.1% growth in 15 years. Plant Vogtle was never needed.
Fact #2: Georgia Power said two new reactors would take seven years to construct and cost $14 billion. They took 15 years and cost $36 billion.
Excellent series, thank you Susie.
Funny how those type of headlines are buried behind the hype. I wonder how the pro nuke crowd feels about being pawns in Trumps get rich while in office schemes.
Looks like you had a fun year! Congratulations. You know who didn’t? Georgia Power customers. At least, not until November 4, 2025. Then we had a whole lotta fun. I’m sorry the worst had to happen with enormous bills due to nuclear energy but at least we had accountability.
I’m trying to understand the damage you’ve been working for 10 years to build. The damage has been ongoing for 10 years with Plant Vogtle where the “fallout” in Georgia continues. It’s nothing new.
Solar is winning the energy race
The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside.
