Carving of the sun god Sol that would have been illuminated from behind so that in the low light of the temple, worshippers would have seen his eyes, mouth and the rays of his solar crown glowing.

Beautifully dramatic lighting effect in this altar depicting the god Sol found near Edinburgh. In the low light of the temple, worshippers would see Sol’s eyes, mouth and the rays of his solar crown glowing.

A row of five mummified cats in the British Museum. Each one is standing on a small square plinth, and essentially resembles a long tube wrapped in strips of (presumably) papyrus, in a variety of patterns, and with a carved (wooden?) cat’s head at the top.
It’s the 136th anniversary today of some highly prized artefacts from Ancient Egypt being auctioned in Liverpool. From there, the 180,000 mummified cats in question went to their splendid and dignified final resting place. A museum?
No. They were ground up and used for fertiliser 🧵

The page is made up of three panels, all taking place in a graveyard at night. The first shows a flashlight shining on a body that's lying in front of a tombstone, which reads "Here Lies Denny." The last name is obscured but it's probably "Colt," which is the name of the Spirit. The next panel shows a blue glove on the ground. The final panel shows three cops and Commissioner Dolan discussing the case. Their faces are all in shadow, and between the blue glove and the blue mask the victim was clutching, they realize that their prime suspect is the Spirit. Dolan reluctantly tells them to send out a citywide alarm to capture him.
The Spirit from February 5, 1950. Art by Will Eisner & Jerry Grandenetti, with letters by Abe Kanegson.

Toast Rack, Manchester, by Sheffield artist Mandy Payne (spray paint and oil on marble). One of my favourite buildings.
I think it has a very Gerry Anderson look about it. Sort of place Captain Scarlet would plummet off.
Proposal: fast / slow lanes in cafés and pubs for those of us who just want a tea or a pint, and those who want grotesquely over complicated coffees.

Restrictions on overtourism in Europe. For tourists, it means planning ahead. For residents, it’s a long-overdue shift. & for Europe’s most famous cities, it may be the only way to survive their own popularity. archive.ph/AHQPc
