Dylan Crawley, Mission Australia program manager in Coonabarabran, on the impact of rising fuel prices on people living in their cars in regional areas.
"They're starting to have to make a choice between filling up a car or buying groceries."

"Fuel costs are yet another expense for people who are already struggling," Mission Australia's Marion Bennett told SBS News.
"People who are sleeping in their cars can't afford a private rental home and are likely on the waitlist for social housing..."
"The food budget was the first to go, even though it was already limited. I’m concerned that fuel supply will be limited in my area … I’m also concerned that I won’t be able to support my family in person as much, as I won’t be able to afford to drive to visit as often."

At 76, Bill Turner is on the brink of homelessness in a state with a shortage of rental housing stock. He's one of the 2,258 West Australians aged over 67 on the waitlist for public housing, & one of 23,000 total applications.

Shocking new data reveals a critical shortage of youth crisis accommodation across Perth.
On 1 night in March, 73 young people were sleeping rough, but there were only 3 beds available.
"Mission Australia’s Youth Accommodation Support Service in Perth’s southern suburbs has six crisis beds and four transitional beds but demand was 10 times higher than capacity last year, with 600 requests for help and only 60 able to be accommodated."
Wattle House has provided emergency relief to people in need for nearly 30 years.
Government funding cuts mean we've had to reduce opening hours and often run out of food. It means more people like 81-year-old Elizabeth are at risk of homelessness.
“Every woman should have a safe home, feel supported and have access to opportunities to lead their best lives.”

"It’s a horrible feeling. We lay with all the windows up in the car and we can’t breathe. If I put the window down a little bit I can’t sleep, because I’m thinking that someone is gonna come along and rip the window off and try to hurt us."
Maggie Beer AO and our aged care residents at Charles Chambers Court enjoyed the tastes of an Italian Summer as they celebrated the impact of the Maggie Beer Foundation's Trainer Mentor Program.
"The food was truly exactly like I would cook at home..."
It’s the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations and, in 2026, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children are still being removed from their families at disproportionate rates. We need investment from government to support and strengthen families and communities.
Yesterday, Charles Chambers Court, our aged care facility in Surry Hills welcomed Maggie Beer AO!
Maggie was there to celebrate a huge achievement by the staff & residents of this home for older people who have experienced or been at risk of homelessness.

We welcome the NSW Coroner’s recommendation for investment in supported accommodation for people experiencing mental health concerns and homelessness.
Stable and secure housing alongside mental healthcare can be life changing and there is a critical need for more of it.
Helping people experiencing homelessness to stay cool in the heat can be life saving. #ExtremeHeatAwarenessDay
"It's really important that we have eyes on the most vulnerable people who are most disproportionately impacted," Missionbeat's Stefan Mackenzie told ABC News.
The housing and homelessness crisis is worsening across Australia.
The federal government must prioritise investment in social & affordable housing, homelessness prevention and lifting the rate of income support payments to at least $589/week.

The Productivity Commission's #ROGS2026 shows too many people are in rental stress. We need more CRA, income support, a $500M Prevention Transformation Fund + 1 in 10 new homes to be social & affordable in the National Housing & Homelessness Plan to #endhomelessness.
As millions of people across the country struggle through another brutal heatwave, renters are trapped in homes that simply can’t cope. 🥵
Safe housing shouldn’t depend on your postcode or your income.

"One of the volunteers, her only positive memories of Christmas Day as a child, was when she attended CLIP."
For Tania Vos, attending Mission Australia’s Christmas Lunch in The Park in 1999 with her two young daughters was about more than a free meal.
It was a lifeline.
