Had a dream that there was global panic about the world running out of oxygen, Nintendo was the only video game company to make a statement about it, and the internet collectively spent its final hours on Earth debating whether Nintendo was being genuine or not

(Just adding at the end, I don’t wish any shade on the artists/crew working on this, I get how hard it is, especially trying to please a corporation like Mattel. Plus! This might’ve been/ continues to be a blast to work on, and that would be great! I’m just postulating as an outsider with fan brain)

A range of different potential Thomas faces, very clearly inspired by early 1900s cartoons, like Silly Symphonies or homages like Cuphead

You can really see some Silly Symphonies ideas at play here. Some of these expressions are not a million miles from stuff we did on Cuphead. It’s a shame it dosn’t appear to have translated into the final design.

Artistic paining of the nearly final Thomas redesign, smaller eye shine and indication of eyelashes make him look infinitely less uncanny

Tiny detail, but if they had just put a hard line for his top eyelashes, it probably would have helped a great deal - seems to have been considered before final render.

It is evident from the full concept art image that they were looking to emulate 1930s/40s art styles at one point. Which would be fitting for the origins of the series, Serious ‘Moon Face’ energy. But they very quickly sanitised it.

I am amused that someone in the concept art stage knew that the execs wouldn’t be brave enough to push the design, so just had fun with making a new range of meme faces.

The “new” Thomas the Tbak engine design, which is identical to how it was before 2020,apart from his new, rounder face with blue coloured irises.

Even in motion there is something unfortunately uncanny about this new face … bit of a milquetoast “refresh” imo.
