We had the most snow here yesterday (~25cms) that I've ever seen this late in the year.

If they were to force suppliers to hold a percentage of their stock for these chains then I have to believe that will help. No one is going to shop at any store, no matter how cheap if they can't carry basic staples consistently.

And make it so that any retailer can access the same product. Right now the big chains can easily block a small operator from accessing something as simple as eggs or bread. Those operators could go to smaller producers but those usually come at a higher price because the economy of scale is lower

To make this work they would have to level the playing field at the supply level because it's basically a monopoly between Costco, Loblaws and Sobeys. For me, that's what needs a policy rework. It's not a free market.

Supply chains are also a major barrier because so much of our food is tied up in contracts between producer and retailer, with retailers holding all the power. Finding a way for these small grocers to get their piece would be hard.

The only problem with legislating it is corporate interests will always find loopholes or work arounds. Also, legislation is vulnerable to changes in government. I don't think we need publicly owned stores, but a system that would make it easier for co-ops or non profits to compete.

I'm not a gun guy but I would assume it would be a heavier load or armour piercing or something just to give them a higher kill rate. The skill involved in hitting that target from a moving plane is unbelievable.
