St. Paul Remade Human History. How Did He Do It? New scholarship reconsiders the apostle who turned a Jewish sect into a world religion—and whose legacy remains contested two millennia later.

Really great piece by Adam Gopnick on current trends in the study of early Christianity. What we think about Paul is almost as important as our conception of Jesus in understanding the Christian faith in its formative years - and the multicultural, Greek-inspired polity of the early Roman Empire.

I root so hard for Eric Lauer, you know.

And thus my clearly too subtle pun.

I’ve deleted my entire account over at X, but I freely admit I thought Russia was gonna at least force regime change in Ukraine in under 18 months. I thought they had the element of surprise and air superiority so it was all but inevitable.

There’s my dumb(est) recent(ish) take.

Elizabeth Fry Society, Dress For Success, and of course Siloam Mission.

“The common enemy of all Mankind”. I can see the resemblance.

Holy heck, Hoffman. Guys. This just isn’t going to work. Sometimes it doesn’t. This is just a coin toss as to whether or not he will fully implode, every time.

Hoffman, I need to go to bed. Don’t screw this up for me.

Surely the Mets aren’t really this bad.

Did not know that. And he’s a lefty, too. Doubly disappointing.

He literally self-radicalized, in public. He seems to have been really affected by Covid. A lot of people were. Hell, I was.

There is a part of me that really wants to meet Alex Jones, and is just fine with whatever the long-term consequences of that meeting might be.

My brother, we are so on the same page.

Absolutely. People who care and try to make a difference who get overwhelmed. It’s how we all want to see ourselves.

I’ll be honest I haven’t seen the AI discourse, but maybe that’s because I am old and don’t look for it. On ICE, like you, I am mystified by some of the criticism.

The thing I get the least is the people dunking on the seemingly pro-ICE clerk. Like, you people think that isn’t a reality? Come on.

And to your point - it would be very fun if Dr. Robby freed the ICE detainee and then led a citizen’s progress to the detention centre and emptied it, bringing DHS down in his thunderous rage. But it wouldn’t be the story the Pitt is telling.

Well, yes. But as you say above - sometimes the take is so wrong its adherents are “fucking morons” lol

I am fine with good faith deconstruction of any work of art. I am less fine with bad faith deconstructions that react badly to any counter.

I don’t think I’m specifically talking about “the woke” - Go woke or go broke! I am more talking about fandom culture write large. The idea of ownership over a story to the point of entitlement to dictate its trajectory. This fandom revolt is largely on the left, true. But we’ve seen it all before.

There is a species of fandom that needs to see their own manifesto delivered on screen or they will somehow feel betrayed - and take it out on anyone else who doesn’t react to that sense of betrayal with submission.

In 2026 it is far more likely that Trump would receive pushback at the National Prayer Breakfast than at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

This is existential for the Conservative Party & for Harper’s Unite the Right project. If the next election is decided before the results come in past Kenora, I can see a Reform 2.0 emerging, that is (at least) agnostic on western separatism. I explained a bit of my thinking on this here:
