Also, is there anything you like with colors/patterns that complement your grandpa's dishes? If I had pattern dishes, I might look for a single-color set that looks great with them, and extend it that way. Or an appealing pattern if his are solid.
I get inexpensive things from dollar stores, enjoy it, and if it breaks or cracks, retire it without compunction. No, nothing matches, but it's fun and it saves me getting precious about a broken bowl. "It's just a dish" doesn't work for me when it was my mother's dish and now my set is ruined.
