The Hungarian for "hobbyhorse" is 'vesszőparipa' (vessző=rod; paripa=steed), both in the literal meaning of the object used as a toy by kids and in the figurative meaning of someone's pet topic of conversation or obsession.

The Hungarian for "passover" is 'pészah estéje'--though most people, if they know anything at all about this, would call it 'zsidó húsvét' which literally means "Jewish Easter" and literally make no sense on any level.

Let's face it the Old Testament (Ószövetség) is truly evil.

Formosus II would open a can of worms. After he died, his body was dug up, mutilated and his 'body' was brought to court in the Cadaver Synod 897 by his successor Boniface VI. Formosus was found guilty and his papacy was retroactiveky annuléd. So much for the sacramental absolution of pardon/peace.

Reading Anna Karan(y)ina in Hungarian, i can't help noticing the frequency with which 'tüstént' is used as a synonym of 'azonnal', for "immediately", with the register of "forthwith".

Based on the logic that the Hungarian for "oikophobia"--fear of one's own home and its surroundings (félelem saját otthontól és annak környezetétől)--is 'oikofóbia'. Whilst "glossophobia"--the fear of public speaking--is 'glosszofóbia'.

Since the Hungarian for "xenoglossophobia"--the fear of / aversion to speaking foreign languages--is 'xenoglosszofóbia'. Then, the aversion to speaking one's native language would be "oikoglossophobia"= 'oikoglosszofóbia'.

[Just spent two blissfully English-free months]

The Hungarian for "builders' rubble" is 'sitt' from dialectic German 'Shiet' ultimately from the same root as Scheiße.

Which is funny since today it is the annual communal recycling day of unwanted household waste (lomtalanítás) and there is a lot of 'sitt' amongst the shit.

The Hungarian for "hiding place" is 'búvóhely' or 'rejtekhely'.

They are from the verbs 'bújik' and 'rejtőzik', both meaning "to hide"; 'hely' meaning "place".
