As a two time cancer survivor who has been a patient in an NIH-funded trial, this hits close to home. I am alive today b/c of NIH and (as a scientist) I know how long it will take to recover from these devastating terminations. We are losing cures for diseases. This will hurt us all.

A chart showing cancelled NIH grants

A chart showing cancelled NIH grants

“I would like to cure brain cancer. I think that's not particularly controversial.” Be that as it may, the NIH terminated that scientist's grant. Here's a huge survey of the 2,500 grants that NIH has killed or delayed...so far. Gift link: nyti.ms/43Jz1yJ

Searchable database of tangible benefits that federally-funded research gave us. A crowd-sourced site. Health and Well-being. National Security. Prosperity.

Folks at Princeton have put together an aggregator to highlight example of how federally funded research has directly impacted people's lives. They are looking for more studies to highlight, so send along suggestions and help make the benefits of science more visible!

As a scientist and two time cancer survivor I can say first hand that the devastation of biomedical research is going to cost lives.

I am a scientist and also a two time cancer survivor. My voice isn’t loud but I have been trying to share what biomedical research means to me. So far though, I haven’t felt like I am making much impact. Would love advice on what to do (beyond just calling reps and sharing info with my groups)

As a survivor of 2 separate cancers, reading this is so devastating. Nearly all drugs come from NIH-supported research. Anyone can get cancer, and when they do the cures that could exist won’t be waiting for them if these attacks on science don’t stop.

Exclusive: Trump White House directs NIH to study ‘regret’ after transgender people transition After cancelling nearly all NIH projects studying transgender health, Trump’s team instructs the US biomedical agency to study negative consequences of transitioning.

The White House sometimes directs the NIH to study certain broad topics, such as cancer or women’s health, but the latest directive’s specificity, inflammatory language and focus on a hyper-polarizing topic are unprecedented, NIH employees say.

The NIH’s Most Reckless Cuts Yet Ending clinical trials with no warning can put patients at risk.

I have been a patient in clinical trials like the ones being abruptly terminated. It was a risk but one I was willing to take to give me the best chance of survival. I can’t wrap my head around this senseless destruction. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

So we can't study women at all now? Is this also to "protect women"?

1 year ago 6 0 1 0

Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.

More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.

I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

“Orchestrated assault”: New tsunami of NIH grant cuts hits South Africa hard Agency moves to terminate nearly 1000 awards, including programs involving “DEI”

Exclusive from me and Jon Cohen @science.org: NIH is terminating nearly 1000 grants in a series of batches. One, which conducts HIV and TB clinical trials in South Africa, was labelled as a "DEI" study that "harms the health of Americans." www.science.org/content/arti...

A friend drove two hours today for her breast cancer chemotherapy only to learn it was canceled due to NIH cuts. Clinical trial ended midstream. No treatment, no restart, no plan, no information. Her bro-in-law's chemo was also canceled.

‘Silence is complicity’ — universities must fight the anti-DEI crackdown Higher-education establishments must not be bullied into abandoning their mission of diversity, equity and inclusion.

DEI is under attack, but the stakes are higher than many realize. Universities *must stand firm* in defending it. I lay out why in my latest piece for Nature.

Silence is complicity. Without DEI, we fail our students, our research, and our future.
