Two life-size paintings on a white wall in my studio. On the left is a painted over photo on canvas of two Iranian women seated in front of a floral curtain. There is a potted flower plant to the left, and both women are washed in bright magenta and lavender. A multicolored floral pattern emerges from their hands and encircle them. The painting is framed with floral fabric, fabric flowers and tassel at the bottom. At the top center is a pane of mirror glass, all known as aneyeh kari.

On the right is a painted over photo on canvas of two Indian men seated on a swing whose ropes are covered in flowers. The seat has a patterned blanket, and the floor is patterned as well. The men both have color washes on their hands and faces, and each have different floral patterns encircling them. The painting is framed with two different fabrics, one geometric and used to create "curtains" and the other a floral one. Brown tassel fringe lines the bottom of each curtain and the bottom of the painting, and two individual large tassels are in each upper corner.

Really excited with how the show is progressing for @denverbotanic.bsky.social—opening this fall, "The Place of Flowers: Works by Daisy Patton"

During the peak of COVID, a number of parents learned or re-learned that teaching is difficult. But this has had no lasting impact. Hasn't translated to calls to increase teacher pay, for example.

Palantir-bros: "we should reject hollow pluralism. empathy is evil"
The masses: "Okay, your technofash ideas about what culture is and should be are worth less than the paper they're written on."
Palantir-bros: "wait, not like that! we should bring back grace and empathy, but only for tech CEOs"

Yeah I appreciate that about you. Who can blame them when there’s always so much pressure for number to go up, especially through funding. I think sometimes we forget about learning theory in learning spaces. Here’s to folks in every one of those rooms making the case for a deeper understanding

So this is when we start talking about the importance of qualitative research in education, the limitations of quant research, and the epistemic hierarchies in social science research, right? Right?

This excellent article "The Science of How COVID Spreads" expands on how institutions have resisted knowledge of airborne disease transmission for more than 100 years, basically because it's inconvenient to deal with.

Gosh I’m so sorry, Jim. This sucks so much and I feel for you, your colleagues, staff, and students. Hope folks are able to find a good path forward, especially if they get to stick around the area

The real issue is that police shouldn't jump to be trigger/arrest-happy. Creating lists/designations of acceptable disabled people to leave alone doesn't fix that problem + civil liberty concerns of what governments will do with said lists.

And these resources can also be inequitably distributed within the same university — eg my college has one post-award and one pre-award staff for roughly 60 TT faculty, while STEM depts may have one pre-award staff for every ~7 faculty. Real bananas, esp when the admin is all like “get more grants!”

The push for institutional neutrality, like the so-called “free-speech crisis,” was always a right wing ploy to get universities to stop pointing out obvious things like “fascists are ascendant” and “racism is bad.”

It is sad that so many university “leaders” took the bait.

Kennedy is a eugenicist.
His words and choices to date provide ample evidence of his deep hatred for disabled ‘weaker’ people. All his ‘policy’ is driven by one goal: make the population ‘fitter’ by ‘weeding out the unfit.’
Speak of him as the open, rank eugenicist he is.

This is not a story about Gen Z refusal; this is a story about how middle managers and executives have been so pilled by an industry that they are willing to fire workers who refuse to use its products.

I’m glad there is a reported ceasefire deal with Iran. But we shouldn’t be in this illegal war in the first place. And Donald Trump can’t simply threaten war crimes with impunity. Congress needs to get back in session now to stop this war and remove Donald Trump.

Ugh this takes me back to taking a course on US politics in fall ’07 and the professor being like “if my sources are right, a huge economic crisis is coming next year” and those of us who were about to graduate were just praying he was wrong. A play-by-play from your husband would’ve been so helpful

@ashleyshoo.bsky.social just to say thnx for “against technoableism.” I was on a panel reviewing a grant that focused on creating disability dongle and I used your work to argue for disabled ppl needing to be part of the project. Unsure if I succeeded, but at least they now know about technoableism

This is brutal. Also, the justification that these decisions use is complete bullshit.

Enrollment, for example, is not a straightforward result of the quality of the program: enrollment relies on institutional support for advertising and recruitment into a given major.
