it is truly outrageous how often I see "claim 1, and claim 2 (citation)" in a scientific paper, and the citation only supports one or neither of the claims.
Congrats!!!
Interesting idea: get scientists to forecast when big things will happen in their fields.
"Your forecasts and the reasoning behind them will feed directly into that work, helping quantify uncertainty and inform where ARIA focuses next."
Here's an easy-to-read blog post about the songbird trap that @verntasco.bsky.social and I designed (in case you don't want to read the journal article!).

The principles of experimental design in ecology and evolution has 20k downloads, but unfortunately I still have to reject ~20% of papers without review because they lack replication at the right level. More discussion among mentors and mentees please.

WAI is hiring! If you know anyone who's great at building communities, coordinating programs, & supporting researchers—but doesn't want to be a PI themselves—send them our way. Remote, mission-driven, & a chance to help build a growing scientific field.

Are you a big DC metro fan by chance?
I like this paper for a lot of reasons, but I'll highlight that the introduction to problems in ecology that motivates the need for more replications was particularly clear/concise.

I'm stoked to have just published the final paper from my PhD in the Journal of Applied Philosophy!

Can't wait to see this!
🧪📣 New paper!
How might welfare affect the way wild animals respond to changes in their environment?

And clearly someone else agrees -- a group of scientists are suing a bunch of publishers over this + other anti-competitive practices. Interested to see where this goes. www.lieffcabraser.com/antitrust/ac...
the argument is usually that peer reviewers aren't working *for* journals, but rather for the community/their university. But this feels very suss to me.
I honestly don't even understand how volunteer peer-review is legal. For profit companies aren't usually allowed to accept volunteer labor.

I set out to write a story about the practical ills of salmon farming (and I did), but also found an even bigger story kinda hidden in plain sight: How humanity is speedrunning the domestication of hundreds of aquatic species, and what it means for them.
Calling all insect researchers! 🐛
