The Shuttle was designed exclusively for use in Earth orbit & also to be at least partly reusable, in order to reduce costs of launching. In contrast, the SLS is designed to leave Earth orbit and get people to the Moon. Carrying wings and landing gear that far would be too fuel-expensive.

A paper came out a few years ago that argued that the only reason the US actually stayed with the program was because Kennedy was assassinated, and because Apollo was associated with JFK and the whole Camelot thing, Johnson and Nixon were loathe to cancel the program despite the great expense.
