Why Illinois? Because it has the strongest legal protections for LGBTQ+ people of any state near the geographic center of the continental US, and there are lots and lots of small-town fixer-uppers for cheap like this

There are three more of similar size under $10k just in this one town

I've always had this pipe dream of "habitat for humanity but for Queer people" so sometimes I browse the cheapest houses in Illinois to see what pops up; I really feel like we could take over some dying former industrial town for not all that much money, and make it something special

Zillow listing for a house that looks very haunted, it's the archetypal "spooky old house," with tall looming architecture, a tower on one side, and a somewhat run-down appearance. This 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house of 2000 square feet in Cairo Illinois is listed at only $7500.

All this needs is a yard sign that says NOT HAUNTED and it'll sell in a heartbeat

I was looking at it more from a geopolitical lens of religious myth's role in garnering international support by justifying the Israeli ethnostate, and how that same corpus of myth undercuts that justification, but yeah I can see how that could muddy things here so I'm bowing out now.

Especially when the basis of the claim of ancestral ownership of the land in question is largely propped up by the same mythical accounts

5 days ago 1 0 1 0

Why would your founding myth boast of an extended period of serial genocide if there wasn't an extended period of serial genocide, even if the details are exaggerated?

5 days ago 2 0 2 0

Wildly, the Palestinian claim is *stronger* the further back we go; the purported founder of the Hebrew people was from Chaldea (in modern-day Iraq) about a thousand miles away

5 days ago 3 0 1 0

The Torah describes the founding of that "indigenous" homeland as a series of genocides against the previous inhabitants, some of whom were the ancestors of the Palestinian people, so is there an arbitrary cutoff date or isn't there?

5 days ago 2 0 1 0

Even if we want to go that route, the accounts of the founding of the "promised land" in the Torah are a series of genocides against the indigenous people by an ethnic group that traces their origins to an area currently within the borders of Iraq

DM only held patent for the sole, but the original uppers for the 1460/1461 were designed by NPS (makers of Solovair) so if you think about it who was really the original?

NPS was already making 8-eye derby boots with traditional soles well before former Nazi doctor Klaus MΓ€rtens injured his foot.

...while DM was still making boots in the UK until 2003; DM reopened one of the UK factories starting in '04 on a very limited basis for a few thousand pair/year and have slowly increased output since then. There's only about a year's gap in UK production but 99% of the post-2003 DMs are foreign.

It's a lot more complicated than that, but close. Solovair's parent company helped develop the 1460 boot and manufactured them under license alongside the Griggs-owned factories until 1995 when the partnership ended, then carried on making them under the new brand name after the deal ended...

My next pair will likely be Solovair, which are within a few bucks of the UK Docs price but with better materials

6 days ago 3 0 1 0

If you get the English ones (sold as "vintage" for about 1.5Γ— the overseas-made price on the website) they're good, but the clearer plastic of the overseas soles just doesn't hold up

6 days ago 0 0 2 0

I was trying to buy the good boots, paid good boot prices, and got crap anyway. Such is capitalism.

Though, funny thing, I've heard that they're holding up better *after* the PE buyout in '13 than the 03-13 run, as long as you're willing to pay extra for UK-manufactured ones.

I had a pair of Docs that lasted from freshman year of high school until I was nearly 30. Their replacement, with the exact same style name, didn't hold up any better than the cheapos.

Turns out they offshored production and cheapened materials in 2003 after overleveraging on the Grunge sales boom.

If you're talking to a woman, any woman but *especially* one whose womanhood constantly a subject of debate in politics and media, you don't get to use "oh I call everyone that" anymore.
