I have a question. How are you so awesome? Answer, please. Detailed explanation.

So, I can’t talk about the specifics of what I’m writing (I’ve signed NDAs, etc) — but for whatever it’s worth, that article by the Ankler caught me off guard just as much as you. I don’t know where that “non-gaming audiences” quote came from or who said it, but at no point has that been said to me.

Appreciating the moment. I know it won’t last, but. I’m grateful to have it. Film/TV is such a rough trade these days — but this little indie-that-could remains a bright spot. Thank you to anyone who watches.

Recommending: Syrianna, The Wire, Traffic, Che, Constant Gardner, Spotlight, Children of Men, Roma — there are quite a few films that break individual POV to address larger systemic issues (all are good watches too). Also check out Battle of Algiers, The Thin Red Line. Great films.

Yeah I mean Ron Howard is the man. But the movie is neither his nor L&M’s. It’s just a thing cobbled together in board rooms.

I mean the irony of the fact that Lord and Miller, who were the guys fired off SOLO for trying to make it too much their own, now handing in a literal triumph that’s owed to their specific creative approach… says everything about where the film business is as opposed to where it should be.

It’s to say that the studios and streamers need to re-learn that creatives are their partners, not their doorstops. In the case of Hail Mary — the question becomes: will we see those up top and their parrots in the trades take the real lesson here going forward? I’m hopeful we’re turning a corner.

… the folks at the top of and inside the studios will need to accept the fact that part of the equation for success will always lie in the hands of the artists and the level to which they are empowered. In front of an behind the camera. This isn’t to say there is no use for suits, bc there is…

And to accomplish that, to rebuild the film industry as eco system that draws in different crowds with different types of movies for everyone and new interesting ideas and stories… (cont’d)

For the film industry to survive? It will need to revert to a system where risks are taken, artists and performers are trusted, and that film needs to be an ecosystem. Our culture is not a potato field in the run up to the great famine — you can’t just make one thing, IP adaptations, forever.

And this scares them. They don’t want to admit that Ryan, Lord and Miller, and Drew Goddard are owed the credit for success because that would be a confession: that the analytics don’t matter, that no trends last forever, that for the film industry to survive? (Cont’d)

Here’s why. These days — folks in power who are *not* creative will do anything to diminish the accomplishments of storytellers when a movie is a success. The reason for this is fear. They know, same as us: that a good idea, talented stars and creatives behind the camera are what makes hit movies.

Project Hail Mary out there smashing records. Original story. No IP beyond being based on a good book. Original sci-fi. Now watch the trades and the suits assert excuses for this success as they try to justify the existence of the algorithms, their data-based analytics. DON’T listen. (cont’d)

It was sad to see so many Irish Americans vote for Trump. Like we’d forgotten our own history. A century ago, Irish coming to America would’ve been the ones detained, separated from our kids, and demonized in conservative media. Just because learned to blend in with White America (cont’d)

Just a reminder for any LA friends: the Slamdance Film Festival is happening at the Sunset Landmark Theaters and DGA theaters now. It’s a phenomenal festival, a REAL independent fest — a festival I owe my career to. I’m down there every day, come find me and let’s watch a movie!

ICE came even later. Its total existence takes up a blink of an eye. These are new, stupid creations. DHS and ICE weren’t around during World War 2, they’ve never once protected our freedoms, our liberty. These are paranoia-fueled wastes of tax money that have never done anything consequential.

ICE agents might be home grown, but ICE itself is an invading force. The Department of Homeland Security was created just a few years ago, it’s a shitheel neo-con creation created around the same time they were telling us Iraq had WMDs. It was built on the foundation of a lie.
