On his return to F1, Can-Am champion Patrick Tambay went surprisingly well in the Theodore-Ford-TY01. The Frenchman qualifying 17th in the Tony Southgate-designed car, with its unusual pylon-mounted front wing.

Elio de Angelis qualified 13th in the new Lotus-Renault-93T. The Italian switched to the spare Lotus-Ford-91 when the 93T's engine expired on the parade lap. De Angelis finished 13th, but was disqualified for changing cars.
