I’m deeply skeptical that the country I’ve seen on full display the last decade (and in the most recent presidential election) is about to elect a president who isn’t male, white, straight, and Christian.

When the topic turns to "what comes next" and "what should we do," we should defer to historians in the same way we defer to doctors on vaccines, lawyers on criminal defense and military generals on strategy and tactics.

This was absolutely one of the most striking things about moving from suburban Atlanta to Manhattan when I was in my 20s. I remember being back home for a visit and, like, struggling to articulate to my parents just how different—and how much better and friendlier—the world felt on foot.

My prediction is that not this, only because it will turn out to be something more unlawful and have a weaker justification than anything an intelligent person could imagine.
