Australia is a liberal democracy and our most important ally’s new National Security Strategy declares liberalism as the enemy. Our national security commentators need to frankly address the challenges that America’s far-right turn poses for our security.
Extremely over-optimistic take. The NSS is unambiguous about prioritising a willingness to interfere in the domestic politics of US allies it accuses of “net zero” ideology, “mass migration” and “suffocating regulation” rather than defend those allies. The Europe-Pacific distinction won’t save us.

Yes, that’s exactly the one. But it also turned out that there‘s an extremely famous photo of a (non-foreign) militiaman playing a piano during the Lebanese civil war, so I wonder if a few different stories were just conflated together.
I remember a similar story, about a French sniper tourist in the Lebanese civil war, but the source was Robert Young Pelton so I can‘t put much stock in it.
