For too long, we have enabled the transformation of entire academic disciplines into ideological enclaves in which critical thinking, debate, and challenging existing paradigms are considered heresy.

Harvard just released a report from its graduating seniors. Only a third of them felt fully comfortable speaking about their honest views in class. This is what happens when faculty become political activists who exploit their classes for pure political indoctrination.

8/ it is no wonder why I'm not sure that cutting the overhead on government funding is such a bad idea. Maybe this will force University leaders to re-think their priorities and ensure that the University is back to focusing on its core mission.

7/ Lastly, in times in which a growing portion of University resources are going to the never-ending expanding (bloated) administrative functions, many of which were created to facilitate the politicization of academia,

6/ which had nothing to do with science, and had everything to do with promoting political doctrine. When you decide to openly exploit the academic system for political mobilization, you cannot complain when the other side reacts.

5/ Similarly, while I strongly oppose the violation of academic freedom and political intervention in formulating University curriculum, let's not pretend that entire disciplines and departments in the last 10 years were not transformed into rigid, illiberal hubs of political indoctrination

4/ The insertion of ideological bias into the academic funding system is NOT new and intensified in the last 10-15 years. You didn't care until now because it was aligned with your own political views.

3/ But let me also remind you that you stayed silent for the last 10 years when we all were required to include ideological/political statements in our research proposals to satisfy gov agencies, even if they had nothing to do with our research.

2/ It is horrible that in the last few weeks, funding for scientific research has been terminated, eliminated, and reviewed based on political/ideological considerations. Science should not be subjected to political commissars.

1/ I do not think I was ever so out of step with most of my academic colleagues. So here are some general thoughts that will explain why I think that so many of the reactions to (what many see as) the current collapse of the academic system are so full of hypocrisy. 🧵
