The Lonely Crowd will feature a new short story by a different author each month throughout 2026. For January, we are delighted to publish a new piece by @pcevans.bsky.social:

Zelenskyy calls Russia’s claim of a strike on one of Putin’s residences a “complete fabrication,” a lie designed to sabotage diplomacy, justify more attacks on Kyiv, and excuse Moscow’s refusal to end the war. He warns the world must not stay silent as Russia tries to derail peace.
We are so sad to hear of the death of Tony Harrison. His work combines inspired poetic flight with demotic energy and a mastery of form. A towering figure, Faber has been publishing his work for stage and screen for over forty years. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
"As of Monday, Ukraine’s drone strikes have knocked out an estimated 17% of Russia’s oil refining capacity, sending fuel prices up at home and straining the Kremlin’s military logistics."

A poem from FIELD REQUIEM (@carcanet.bsky.social) for my beloved dad, the many selves of him. After his sudden death in December, I wanted winter to last for years and years, but the prairies have turned to spring, the crocuses are blooming. www.the-tls.co.uk/literature/o...
‘To sign my name? Thank you, no,
Though the penitents linger on death row.
And the generalissimo like an Exocet
Is homing in on Heathrow.
Indifferent to the inferno?’

Very pleased that the excellent The Lonely Crowd has chosen me as poet of the month for April.
Gorgeous cover.
Could you add me too, Mari?
My new poetry collection 'Grey time' comes out in July 2025 and I am on the lookout for reading opportunities - preferably paid (at least travel and accommodation) as money is tight. If you run an event and would like to know more about me/my collection do shout! ninearchespress.com/publications...

Oh, golly. You'll have to tell me about the surgery, but not in a public post!
We missed you at the translator's gathering on Sunday. If you're the real Egan?
I just had a chat with a bot or scammer posing as the author Elizabeth Strout. When I declined their 'help', they suddenly turned into a 'deleted account'.

Here we are: DELTRANS. Dutch-to-English translators getting together to discuss the sudden drop-off in work, the uses and misuses of AI, editing and publicity. Thanks to the Amsterdam Vertalershuis for hosting us. @davidcolmer.bsky.social (anyone else on bsky yet?)
The first recorded lines of poetry in Dutch, in an 11th century manuscript:
‘Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan hic enda thu wat unbidan we nu?.’
‘Do all of the birds have nests, but for you and me; well, what are we waiting for?’

There are things that break you as a poet and writer. Often you can’t even mention them. All you can do is go back to the work, the writing process will help you survive, go back & every single improvement will help to save you, keep going, the art is what matters, not the rest.

⚠️ Pontypridd has been hit by devastating floods and our wonderful independent bookshop, Storyville Books, has seen much of its stock destroyed.
If you’re able to buy a book from them, this would go such a long way to help support them rebuild in the aftermath.

That's very sad. Mick was a lovely guy. Hugely supportive. I loved his world-weary wit and irony.
In the Netherlands, too, 40+ pages is standard. Collections are also more expensive than in the UK and are produced as luxury objects.
I don't think the poetry collection of 60+ pages is the correct model for our artform. Spined books of 40 odd pages would be the way to go, plus selecteds and collecteds. 60+ pages is driven by economics, not content.
I read pamphlets frequently, bought via readings or from publishers directly. Many poets publish a pamphlet between collections. They are often more satisfying than the full collections, which are often too long.
I'm in the early stages of organising some sort of network for people who are actively translating poetry, and publishing (or hoping to publish) their translations. If you might be interested, be in touch. And do please forward/retweet!
Thanks, Jeremy.
