In short, I think everyone is in a tough tough spot and some form of a cap is inevitable.

Some slight of hand is definitely possible. MLB teams rarely get put up for sale. But the Mets traded hands about five years ago for 2.4B. Massive market, huge fanbase, and still wildly cheaper than the cheapest NBA franchise (Memphis). And operating costs for the Mets are far higher.

The owners have looked at NFL and NBA franchise values skyrocket, while MLB franchise value stagnate. TV deals continue to be a morass, so the only remaining option in the cost vs revenue space is to limit salaries. Parity is not viewed as something that would make franchise values increase.
