“And anyone who wants it is unfit to govern in a province or country as great and as (still) democratic as ours.”

A powerful piece from Rachel Notley on the UCP’s plans to rig the map for our next election.
“It has to stop here. If we allow politicians to rig elections, then we will be giving them carte blanche to do anything they want.
No politician should ever hold that power.” 1/2 #abpoli
We can’t let the UCP rig the map for our next election. Share this with your family and friends.
Every Albertan needs to know and to speak up to defend our democracy.

A 2nd member of the Electoral Boundaries Conmission is calling out the UCP.
“When MLAs of any stripe start picking their voters, instead of voters picking their MLAs, we are on a very slippery slope.
…this is a real stab in the heart for democracy…grassroots democracy being challenged.” #abpoli
Another voice raising concerns over Alberta's plan to redraw the electoral map, with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association saying the UCP's plan "casts a doubt over the equity and fairness of Alberta’s electoral process."
The independent Boundaries Commission consulted with thousands of Albertans before publishing its report.
Ignoring the report is cheating.
Ignoring the report is gerrymandering.
On a similar note, a politician as self- interested, destructive & undemocratic as Danielle Smith makes a clear case for having earned their way out of the Premier’s office. #abpoli
“At the end of the day elected representatives should never be the ones setting their own boundaries.”
Mayors Knack & Farkas speak out against Danielle Smith & the UCP’s plan to have a committee dominated by UCP MLAs redraw our provincial elections map. #abpoli
“If the govt were looking to... gerrymander districts... this new, hastily designed process undercuts [public consultation] and puts the decisions in the hands of partisan appointees in a way that we have not seen in Canada since the 1940s.”

Danielle Smith and the UCP are trying to redraw Alberta's electoral map to rig the next election.
Here's what every Albertan needs to understand about their Trump-inspired playbook. 🧵⏬
Call or write the Premier and Minister of Justice and tell them to stop cheating and accept the majority map from the independent commission.

The UCP are setting themselves up to rig our elections map so they can steal the next election.
I explain how.
This is a direct attack on your right to free and fair elections.
So it’s time to get loud. 1/2 #abpoli
“Really bad for democracy.”—Calgary law prof Shaun Fluker on UCP setting aside the commission report & creating a special select MLA committee
He warns once a majority gov’t puts elected officials on the committee, “you’re entering the drain of gerrymandering.”

Lunty is suggesting that Justice Miller recommended redoing everything. As opposed to this: For all the reasons stated herein, the majority recommends the adoption of the majority report in its totality.
The UCP said they would respect the findings of the independent Boundaries Commission ... until they didn't like the results.
Now, they're ignoring the experts, who consulted with thousands of Albertans, to push through a map that would steal your vote and rig the election.
Danielle Smith and the UCP hate accountability
So much so, they’re setting themselves up to rig our next election.
Every Albertan needs to stand up and tell them NO.

There is a reason that we do not have MLAs decide on electoral boundaries. Tossing out the Electoral Boundaries Commission and replacing it with a UCP-dominated committee is not just a bad idea. It is really bad for democracy. Ask the US, ask Hungary. This is not normal!
They are literally making it up as they go along. When they don't like the outcome, the Smith government rigs the process.
It's a worrisome pattern for those who care about procedural fairness and institutional forebearance.
You know, real conservatives.
First, their health minister used confidential info to intimidate a critic. Then another accessed a recall proponent's voting records. Now another wants to know what Albertans are reading in public libraries.
When will UCP libertarians stand up?

If the UCP goes forward with this plan to gerrymander Alberta's electoral boundaries, Albertans of all partisan persuasions will be called upon to push back. And hard.

It’s official.
The UCP are going all in on rigging the next election.
It’s unprecedented and unacceptable.
MLAs should have no part in drawing the boundaries for the seats they run to represent.
We’ll have much more to say n the days to come because, Alberta, we need to fight back. #abpoli
Today, Danielle Smith and the UCP caucus unveiled plans to rig the next election:
A new motion indicates the UCP's plans to manipulate the election maps for the next election in their favour, and without any requirement to consult the public.
This has never been done in Canadian history. /1

Danielle Smith wants to do for Lethbridge what’s she’s done for healthcare…
…create 4x the bureaucracy & make it 4x harder for them to get anything done.
All because she’s desperate to hold on to power.
Don’t let the UCP cheat in the next election.

“Albertans feel every cent when they fill up,” said @naheednenshi.bsky.social
“Families and business owners are doing the math at the pump and wondering what they’re going to cut next. Dropping the provincial gas tax is one clear, practical way the government can help today.”
Albertans need relief at the pumps. It's why we're calling on the government to remove the provincial gas tax.
That’s 13 cents per litre, or $300+ a year for the average family.
This simple measure would provide relief for businesses, in agriculture, truckers, and anyone who commutes by car.
And hey, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation agrees with the Alberta NDP, also calling for Premier Smith to pause the provincial fuel tax
Alberta's NDP are calling for the UCP to temporarily remove the 13-cents-per-litre provincial gas tax, suggetsing it will save the average family $300 per year.
