Jalopnik reliably having a pro-urbanist bent is something I never could’ve predicted 20 years ago but I’m here for it.

We’re taking the “patriot” label back along with the American flag, music, hobbies, sports and all the other communities the right has colonized.

Just putting out the memo here.

Just did a tumblesault for the first time in 25 years and a bunch of stuff in my neck and back pulled and cracked and I feel amazing and scared for tomorrow.

This, incidentally, is partly why I am skeptical that our yearly surveys are capturing the effect of social media on teen mental health

You can only learn the dynamics of a system if you sample it at least often as the shortest timescale of interest. If you under sample, you can learn nothing about fast processes. This is a basic fact of dynamical systems and needs to be part of all quantitative training.

My lord framing an analysis around carefully spending alpha on hypothesis tests when you want the estimates with expected precision is absurd.

The Black Forest Mill in Highland Mills, NY. It was always very good until it collapsed, but not uniquely so, except their German potato salad was perfect. Never had one that met the mark since. I want some now.😔

Hing Loon in Seattle’s Chinatown/International District. I miss the salt and pepper pork chops and no one else’s hit the same. And the ladies running the place were so sweet, as were the complimentary sesame balls. 💔

Does “absolute correlate” mean line that marks ~100% efficacy against an endpoint? Because if so, it’s nuts to expect that. Very few diseases have one, and they all have a separation of scales/compartmentalization that separates disease from infection. Most pathogens don’t work that way! Pet peeve..
