Search - LC Linked Data Service: Authorities and Vocabularies | Library of Congress

I am a for-real archives standards person but a fake library standards person. Did we know that LC has a vocabulary of demographic terms and it includes ethnicities??? id.loc.gov/search/?q=me...

my hot take re: librarianship is that the copyright system as currently defined already has many, many, many defenders, a great many of them very well resourced, and it's unnecessary for us as a profession to defend it stringently as well.

I always wonder - usually in vain - just how big auction houses determine provenance information. Thanks to the Epstein Files, we can see exactly how a seemingly rock-solid provenance was built on shifting sands for this Hercules. 🧵

staff in my doctor's office: oh that's an interesting way to write dates, why do you do it that way?

me: .....ok how much time do you have and what is your general familiarity with and/or interest in standards bodies

By the way, this is one of the cheaper and easier parts of the process of trying to have a baby as a queer couple.

I have to pay a lawyer $350 to write an addendum to a contract to note that it is also valid in Rhode Island in addition to being valid in Massachusetts so that he can then write a letter saying that it’s valid in Rhode Island.

Airline pilots and Episcopal priests are the only two groups I know of that have a mandatory retirement age. I think for pilots it's an FAA requirement, and it seems as though there should be other areas where regulators acknowledge the concrete dangers of having aging people in power!

Lol our exhibits furniture vendor was seven months late with delivery and now wants to charge us extra for travel expenses because they had to install during the winter. PLEASE DM me if this sounds like familiar behavior to you because I want to talk shit so bad.

You do "emotional labour" when you are producing an inauthentic emotional state as a product to be sold, which, like the factor lineworker producing a widget all day long that *they* don't own, is a form of alienation a la Marx.

Yeah, this one really squares my boobs as a sociologist. Arlie Russell Hochschild made one of the most important contributions to the sociology of labour ever, updating the Marxist concept of alienation for the late 20th century and it got sludged into "I don't want to call my mom."

Librarians love talking about working and do not seem particularly bothered when work doesn't actually get done.

My normally very good sleeper toddler had a bad dream last night so I crawled into bed with him. He woke me up this morning by telling me that I’m beautiful. Is this my weird Instagram boy mom origin story?

One of my philosophies of management is that it’s not really possible to get in trouble with me at work. We all have stuff that’s too much or that we don’t know how to do.

But if you hand-encode a link or type in a barcode by hand, you will be sent to the archives sorghum fields for reeducation.

Public school enrollment in Massachusetts is at a 30-year low, and half of the state’s 1,600 schools operate <80% of capacity.

Yet “school capacity” remains a common argument used opposing new multifamily housing in many suburbs.

In nearly every community, it’s simply a myth.

I am shocked that our editors didn’t push back more. It’s because they’re wonderful and also because they wanted the book to be fun to read.

lol I wish they had kept our accusation that diverse collecting is too often white people filling out the Pokédex.

The most useful political distinction to pay attention to in my experience is asking whether children and young adults are most likely to suffer harm from people inside or outside their family. Only people who say “inside” are sensitive to power dynamics that matter

I definitely fouled up a Quaker School interview when I got asked about "reparative description" and I went, "It's not even the 10th most important thing we can do"

Maybe that was harsh, but I have also seen repdesc become "In honor of African Americans let us transcribe the diaries of this slaver"

The discipline has been cultivating an Avoidant Personality forever, and so the notion that you would seek to meet People and treat their contemporary stuff with all our tradecraft is just, alien.

None of this behavior is harmful, lots of nice people in our field. But this can't be how we are led

I wish that I could help every archivist know that they WILL get yelled at somehow somewhere because we work with people and some people are nuts. We cannot put complainers in charge. Your work should be in service of building access to the past by people who could benefit from it.
