The lighthouse keeper forgot to write in his journal today, because the clocks changed last night and the entry generation cronjob triggers at an hour that did not happen...

The lighthouse keeper wakes up with a positive mindset. The sun reflects off the water. He goes down to the beach to swim in the shallows, the water is bracing.

the razbuten "gaming for non gamers" videos talk about the "language of games" that is completely impenetrable to anyone who isnt familiar with them. Why should I think to double jump? And why should I think to punch that tree?

Roguey games almost seem to revel in their own obfuscation sometimes

this was my vague attempt at solving the same problem. In hindsight, I didnt even mention how one would resize a terminal... pretty shabby now I think about it

I suppose accessibility stretches into so many areas of gamedev

ok yeh so the renderer sees "draw a mech" and then it asks, does this have an ascii value, does this have a tile, and are there further decorations (hp etc) to go on top. If the thing doesnt have one of those elements, it simply doesnt get drawn

Pretty cool stuff. Are the tiles simply drop in replacements for the ascii glyphs? And any words wisdom for keeping the two systems distinct and abstracted. Im currently trying to allow for pure ascii, extended ascii and possible sprites too, but im playing with the fire of early over generalisation

not much to show for months of roguelikedeving, a little bit out of my depth with developing the back end of this engine.

but, viewport panels are now constructed from data config files, and it finally looks like a game screen. Maybe I will finally commit to actually putting something on it!

That stuff is tricky. I don't really understand the best practices, but I started with simply getting a cross compiled helloworld, and then added libraries in until I had enough to build something. Honestly, it took me about five years to actually manage it. It's intricate but not complex

what is roguelikedev from scratch if not a collection of functions, i do not know

Well, glad you are finding your way back

Hope you have managed to sort most of the mint/mac issues, though. For a wee while, tinkering with all the low-level stuff was a bit of a hobby. Nowadays, as you described, if vi feels responsive, I don't ask much more of the OS. I don't buy into "ricing"

classic programmer move ;)

Love to see it.

I got taught to program at uni. I had only had my own computer for a few months prior. I realised immediately that programming on my Windows laptop was so much harder than on the Linux PCs. So dropped windows shortly thereafter and never looked back. I think it's just much simpler

I think you should change your bio to "programmer" not "learning to program", your stuff is shit hot, you know your stuff!

Good read @danarama.bsky.social and I dont think id ever pinned it down like this drew, although thats for sure how I feel too. Im not a professional dev, I do it in my free time because I like making things

I have been thinking about this all day since I seen it this morning. I really really love this concept

Ruined stone building on heathery hillside

Ruined stone building on heathery hillside

A shieling in the western isles.

Folk lived in these in the hills for thousands of years up till about 300 or so years ago. They're everywhere here, I think they're really quite magical

Do you know if they had a particularly good breeding season last year? I wanted to ask you if there are more dead seabirds washing up because there was a larger population in general?
