Alan Dean Foster reference +1
I never finished my essay for Georgetown, and was too cocky and only applied at first to University of Santa Clara. Scrambled in early 85 after rejection to find some place to go ( class of 85). Ended up at Loyola of Chicago. Dean told me I had highest SAT score of my Freshman class
In 84/85, I used to get recruitment letters from University of Chicago. Unfortunately, my dad had a stipulation that I had to go to a Catholic university, or he wouldn't pay. As a northwest Indiana resident, Notre Dame was his preference, but he was rabid alumni, and I wanted to escape.
I always wanted the x-Ray glasses...
Oops, that should be Saturday only...
Yeah, these guys play regularly at Naka Market on Phuket on Saturday and Friday
Saw them at The Vic Theater in 91
Northwest Indiana - Chicago museums, Oriental Institute at Universit of Chicago, Frank Loyd Wright Robi House, Chinatown, Steel mills, Amish Acres, Indiana Dunes
Or mahjong
Blatz or Black Label pre-gaming at Loyola before attending a sports game or going to a bar. Quick, social, and cheap for poor students
When I was teaching English at a University in Shanghai in 98, the students were so obvious and bad with their cheating skills
Chicago as Calvinist?
I'm re-reading the Laundry Files at the moment (for obvious reasons) and this reminds me of some of the procedures documented in "The Atrocity Archives".
Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out.
As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class.
Here's what happened:
Reacher and Peacemaker
I did a similar solo journey from Austin to Valparaiso Indiana in 2008. Builds character or something like that...
Dan Da Dan is one of the rare narratives where both leads are a very similar range of AuDHD-coding and the show is off-the-rails *wild*
But it works so well because the setting is so absurd that the setting drives the story around them.
I'm now having flashbacks to the 70s/80s and a sudden craving
I thought there for a micro second that you were referring to the St. Louis Cardinals as some sort of meta-burn by Leo
My mother in law tells me I'm so fat and then puts more food in my bowl
I saw PBR in City Shop in Shanghai in 98 and was amazed that it was more expensive than the Heineken
I have officially begun exercising again, and resuming it confirms what I already knew about myself: I fucking hate it, never get the benefit of "endorphin rush" and therefore participate in it only under duress, ie, the knowledge that as a 56-year-old person, if I don't, later life will suck more.
Just finished it. I love Gretchen!
And the airplane...
Late 90s I used to have an "edgy" quote as part of my email signature: "95% of quoted statistics are used to prove your point. Including this one..."
We went in 6th grade (Northwest Indiana). I still remember the heat as the slabs of steel rolled down to be increasingly compressed thinner
Grade school library in 70s - "Four Day Planet" by H Beam Piper and Tom Swift series

I'm going to use this in my misleading chart part of my class today...
