Sonic 1 is in this weird transitional space between the 1980s and 1990s and the series hadn’t worked out what it wanted to be yet - it’s a super interesting game and perhaps even moreso since Sonic 2 overshadowed it in the zeitgeist (which made a lot of the weirder design decisions fade from memory)
