Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential?

Clears it up a lot.
The crucial thing to understand about Peter Thiel is that he adores "The Lord of the Rings" and no one in human history has ever so utterly completely missed all the salient points of what a book is about.
Yay you! (For the last half hour, our local broadcast was pre-empted by weather coverage of The Watch For and Warnings Of Tornadoes That Tore Bedeviled Northern Illinois)
A hand dropping a ballot in a box; the box is a complicated, many-geared machine. On its faceplate is an 'I voted' sticker that has been modified to read 'I voted?'
After Bush v Gore, I got involved in a bunch of ugly tech policy fights over voting machines. The hanging chad debacle prompted Congress to appropriate funds for states to purchase new touchscreen voting machines based on a robust, open standard. Problem was, those machines didn't exist.

Since Dave is trending, I do wanna reshare this great piece of investigative work by Michael Hobbes, that goes into what actually happened with Daphne Dornan, the trans woman whose suicide Dave explicitly exploited to push hate speech. Dave is such a POS.

“You gotta learn AI or get left behind!” is a bit galling given that the entire purpose of AI seems to be to steal our work and fuck our brains and shit up the planet, which is to say, its GOAL is to leave us all behind. That, in order to make its owners rich.
I actually wrote about it in my memoir, Warrior: My Path to Being Brave. Sports Illustrated printed an excerpt that explains what happened to me that season. www.si.com/nfl/2023/01/...
“If I finish a book a week, I will read only a few thousand books in my lifetime, about a tenth of a percent of the contents of the greatest libraries of our time. The trick is to know which books to read.”
― Carl Sagan
That phrase "longing for inconvenience" to describe a desire to not be bled slowly and endlessly by every single entertainment choice tells the reader everything he needs to know about the writer's mentality.
On January 10, 2022, the Knicks played the San Antonio Spurs at the Garden. It was Pride night. Richards was there, attending with a friend. An 18-page report prepared by Eversole's Threat Management Group and reviewed by WIRED shows just how closely she was being monitored. 07:10:20 // CAM 0241 // scans her ticket to section 102, Row 8, Seat 5 07:11:14 // CAM 1434 // goes up terrace escalators on level 3 to level 6 concourse 07:12:52 // CAM AC10 // hugs usher Appendix A of the report has a screenshot of the embrace, with Richards circled in red. 08:08:58 // CAM 1093 // talking with F&B worker at the Draft Kings Bar 08:10:49 // CAM 0512 // pays for the drinks 08:31:19 // CAM 0485 // eating at a table It goes on and on. At 8:48 pm, camera 0489 spots another quick hug with an MSG “membership experience executive” (there's a grainy photo in the report's Appendix N). Two minutes and two seconds later, the same camera captures her heading into the women's bathroom. Her exit is noted after precisely two minutes and five seconds.
The owner of MSG and the Knicks compiled this kind of second-by-second surveillance of a trans woman while they were in the arena. They're doing this at all venues owned by James Dolan of perceived enemies. Crazy, crazy shit.

LEFT: What Donald is making our troops in Iran eat.
RIGHT: What Donald is giving folks at Mar-a-Lago to eat.
Honestly, I thought I was going to make this point a lot better than I can. The food at Mar-a-Lago may be richer and more plentiful, but it still looks like poorly-plated slop.
Right?!? Because I want to play this person NO this person NO *this* person, I keep restarting the game (and loving it)
ICE is not about immigration.
ICE is about normalizing a paramilitary force on peaceful streets.
Abolish ICE.
So spake the prophet @chuckwendig.bsky.social “Pants be the tool of thine oppressors.”
“You suggested that Black children on ADHD medication should be re-parented.”
Democratic Rep. Terri Sewell calls out Health Secretary RFK Jr. for saying Black children should be taken away by the federal government from their families.
Then, he denied reality.

THE SENATE IS VOTING ON THE BOUNDARY WATERS RIGHT NOW!
Tonight, while most people are watching TV or putting their kids to bed, the U.S. Senate is taking a vote that could permanently end protections for one of the most beloved wilderness areas in America.
The question that I get asked most often these days is: Even if the ceasefire in Iran holds, has the war already imposed large irreversible costs on Americans?
So I made a video about these issues. The stakes may be much larger than you think: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTuS...
Again: Couple this with his enthusiasm for burning bodies of Iraqis he killed and... He just seems like a psycho!
JUST NOW: Bernie’s effort to block military aid to Israel FAILS with 40 votes
@MarshaBlackburn @SenatorHagerty voted to sell more bombs and bulldozers to Israel — along with the rest of the Republicans and 7 Dems… including @SenSchumer 🤔
One-third of Americans skip meals or other needs to afford healthcare
People are skipping meals. Giving up on having children. Letting the dream of a home go — all because they can’t afford to get sick. While Americans suffer, Trump & Republicans cut Medicaid to fund a war no one wanted. 💔
#HealthcareNotTrumpsWar
Sen. Tina Smith won’t let you forget: Republicans just found $200 billion for a war in Iran but are cutting healthcare for 300,000 Americans to pay for it.
Families don’t get to choose between rent and insulin so Republicans can fund a forever war.

Gregg Phillips, the high-ranking FEMA official who said he teleported to a Waffle House has a history of making supernatural claims we found in his podcasts: a dead girlfriend who lifted his car off the road to avoid a crash, Satan encountering him on a hike, etc.

That’s kinda awesome (said the nearly 60yo dude who still gets excited about such things)
“To everything there is a season, and a time for everything under Heaven.” Or something like that?
