It differs between manuscripts. In one I've shelved, 'massive' was used a lot??? I don't know why.

In my #RevPit submission, the amount of times 'maybe' was used... That was diabolical. POV character is kinda headstrong, and then she turns around and goes "Well, maybe..." She's now more definitive.

1st: A currently untitled YA urban fantasy, dual POV. We follow Calliope Reid, a demon hunter who becomes possessed by the soul of an angel, and Orion, the reaper who's hellbent on saving her before the angel's soul consumes Calliope's.

You could have him start the scene as "furniture". Like maybe his chair is positioned perfectly in the sunlight, but bc of that Donovan can't see so he shifts or moves seats, thus an act of defiance in this thing he otherwise can't escape. This also depends on where in the story this takes place

...and his situation, given that this meeting is in a staged environment.

I hope this was helpful! Also sorry for the ramble. I saw strengths in both and thought combining them at points could work well.

...but I like how the second paragraph is phrased in Option 1. "Gingerroot. Snowmelt. Three stirs clockwise." I like that a lot.

And Option 1's third paragraph feels stronger with "Polished, posied, chosen for..." That tells me that's what Donovan believes with certainty.

I'm intrigued by Donovan

Overall, I prefer Option 1.

My in-depth opinion is that I like the top paragraph from option 1 better, though I would personally remove the 2nd sentence. That would give "It was all staged..." more weight.

I like the action of Donovan tilting his head to look at the arch from option 2

I deeply love that trilogy! CP is the best ending we probably could've gotten to that story. I had my husband watch season 1 of Shadowhunters and I kept telling him how Jace and Alec are nothing compared to Will and Jem.

And Tessa!!! All my love to her. One of my fave female protagonists.
