🚨 NEW BOOK 🚨

I just published my second book! 271 Guiding Principles to Accelerate Your Fine Art Photography. Helps those getting into photography or rounding out their knowledge.

When I got into photography, I would’ve happily paid $100 for this (I’m charging $10).

You have not lost your mind.

Keep preaching.

Nice sentiment but it is why Americans hate the government—elected reps need to govern, not go on strike.

I’m a fan of old Elon Musk, before he got on the crazy train. But this version of Musk is unhinged and a downright threat to American democracy.

Yes! That would be great!

Begging the political press to stop just reporting on what Trump says he's done, and actually investigating what has *actually* happened. The focus on rushing out stories to be first is letting the MAGA world play you over and over and over again.

Hey, want to know what marketing really is?

Making it as easy as possible for people to know what your thing is and that it exists. Bonus points for if you can help them understand why they might want it.

Marketing people reduce the friction that keeps this from happening.

I feel seen. And judged.

Yes!! I want to drink in the feeling of that place.

One of my all-time favorite films. Not only is the topic fascinating and terrifying at once, but Soderberg is really at the top of his game.

Viruses ignore borders, too. When the CDC holds war game practices about this, they do it on the US-Mexican border just to see how poorly prepared we are.

This cuts hard.

Good insight. I’ll have to go back and rewatch those films with this in mind. Have you ever seen his first film, Following?

I am *constantly* listening to podcasts about true crime, history, and fascism to gain better insights into why people do villainous things, even though they are not two dimensional cutouts. (Rachel Maddow’s Ultra podcast is pure gold, but any biopic on Roy Cohn is equally riveting.)

Show of hands if you play dopamine-heavy sci fi video games like No Man’s Sky to keep feeding your brain on perpetually novel flora, fauna, and boldly colorful solar systems so you stay inspired to finish plotting and worldbuilding a science fiction novel series?

⬇️ A millions times this.

Unique aliens, gorgeous color palette, Chrighton’s hilarious pop culture comments, incredible storylines (the “twinning” storyline was a mind-bender”)…

Years later, when I had a chance to meet the writer for Alien OR Rockne O’Bannon, I chose Rockne. I did not regret it!

I finished Ian M. Banks’ Consider Phlebas this weekend.

Banks is such a good writer that I am both inspired and intimidated by his excellence…

Plus, it feels like it was written yesterday—the true mark of a classic!

(Bonus points to the cover designer for putting type so close to the bleed!)

why the "social object" is the future of marketing From my previous post: The Social Object, in a nutshell, is the reason two people are talking to each other, as opposed to talking to somebody else. Human

I got lassoed in last minute to do merch for my kids’ play. Coffee mugs and T-shirts, standard stuff. Rush shipping fees absorbed any profits.

With enough advance planning, though, you can do unique and profitable marketing campaigns using social objects. I always re-read this post for inspiration:

Gaiman wrote Coroline with only 50 words a day. So I think you’re in the sweet spot! 👏👏👏

The secret to doing more is doing *fewer* things, to subtract the busy but ultimately meaningless clutter.

Fewer actions means you can do whatever’s left better. Eventually, a domino effect kicks in. It’s almost magic.

Do not ask me how I learned this—I don’t want to start drinking again.

Never stop listening.
Always make time.
Sometimes be forceful.
Rarely be distracted.

Never stop making.
Always be open.
Sometimes be cagey.
Rarely be unreachable.

Never be rude.
Always be loving.
Sometimes be playful.
Rarely be intense.

Never stop.
Always create.
Sometimes rest.
Rarely resign.

It’s really amazing. Nailed it.

I know someone locally who does pinhole photography where you develop in camera. The effect is always so ethereal…

Yeah, that makes sense.

If this is for hardcore MAGA Nazis, sure. Yes. Obviously.

If it’s for those not hardcore, there is some value is trying to have civil conversation.

I mean, I’m fine blocking people who are not civil.

But civil and rational conversation plants the seat of doubt in their dogmatic authoritarianism.
