excited to share our new open access paper in LCP! We explored the interactive effects of defendant race, interrogation coercion, and expert testimony on mock jurors’ decisions in a trial involving a recanted confession.

We got two for our sons and couldn’t believe they actually made them different! They’ve been talking about them all week lol such a cool thing for CP to do.
So proud! Great work Doc!
Extremely concerning. Urging folks to sign the petition in the thread and contact your local MP. Scary times ahead for Science in Canada.
If you’re at CPA today, make sure to stop by my PhD student Natalie Rajack’s data blitz in the Battery Room, where she’ll be discussing the influence of police legitimacy on jurors’ perceptions of recanted confessions! @canadianpsychology.bsky.social
Congrats Rylan!
We can do this 😅

Article from 2024 in a criminology journal retracted because “multiple sources cited could not be found using the references provided”.
The retraction notice is opaque, but I imagine it’s fairly likely some of the references had been hallucinated by AI. 😲

FYI: I am hearing that it would be a very good idea to log into research.gov and download copies of things like award letters if you have active NSF grants.
I also recommend grabbing PDFs/screenshots of public abstracts for NSF awards in case that database goes away.
Evelyn Maeder told me to “never utilize the word utilize when you could have used the word used instead” and it’s always stuck w me!
UF spokesperson Cynthia Roldán confirmed that the school’s police department signed a 287(g) agreement, which allows local law enforcement to partner with ICE for immigration enforcement. The partnership comes almost two weeks after UF student Felipe Zapata Velasquez was detained by immigration enforcement officers after being arrested for driving under an expired license. Other Florida colleges, including the University of South Florida and Florida Atlantic University, have signed similar agreements, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The 287(g) program allows ICE to “enhance collaboration with state and local law enforcement partners to protect the homeland through the arrest and removal of aliens who undermine the safety of our nation’s communities and the integrity of U.S. immigration laws,” according to its website.
In a heinous development, the University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of South Florida have signed agreements to collaborate with ICE for “immigration enforcement.”

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.
Poilievre pulling a Trump & Musk & making clear he will cut funding to anything he considers “woke” in federal public service & university research - like anything to do with climate science.
As Danielle Smith made clear, Poilievre is “in sync” with Trump. We can never let him win. #TeamCarney

Today I was told to take out a line about being a mentor to students from diverse backgrounds and historically underrepresented groups from my biosketch for a proposal, because it might damage our chances of getting federal funding.
How has it come to this? I feel absolutely sick.
