Y'know what the thing is about Fallon's painfully unfunny 51st state joke? It also makes no sense.

I guarantee you 180 countries were not watching the Superbowl. That is an American thing. Most of the world doesn't give a shit.

I'd like to say I am ignoring the Superbowl as part of boycotting American exports.

But tbh I have never cared about football.

The fully restored Sheringham Point Lighthouse shines bright in the Netflix series Dead Boy Detectives. The final phase of restoration work was the first project we contributed to in the Capital Regional District. heyor.ca/961Hu7

Still not buying American.

Trust is broken and it's not gonna come back easily. It definitely won't come back in the next four years.

Just did my first no American products grocery shop. Buying all Canadian wasn't possible (I ended up about 50% Canadian, 50% non-American countries) but I was able to avoid US made products quite easily.

No worries! Yeah I am extremely kink positive. So I have no issue at all with people doing whatever kinky things with characters in fic and art that their heart desires.

The issue comes when people call that the only valid reading and attack people who disagree.

There's nothing wrong with kink in fandom! I mean, it's what it's built on. The thing that bugs me is when people don't differentiate between what a reasonable casual viewer might get from watching a thing and months/years of fanon and people writing their own version.

Yeah. It's one part self-awareness, one part basic respect.

Talk shit all you want in private. But don't go running your mouth in a public forum with interpretations not supported by canon like it's fact. And especially don't do that while insulting and degrading a section of the queer community.

1 year ago 3 1 1 0

Especially since these headcanons are usually preeettyyyy far off what a reasonable person would get from simply watching a show and engaging with it in a casual way.

1 year ago 2 0 1 0

"Having a different opinion on pop culture shouldn't lead to a personal attack" is a very reasonable stance.

AND YET some people who have turned a fictional character into an avatar of themselves can't seem to parse how unreasonable asking someone to adhere to their headcanon is.

It's fine! I'd be DMing my thoughts if I didn't want it out there. Though if the acephobic gomens people find me I might regret it ๐Ÿ˜…

1 year ago 1 0 1 0

Like, if you tried to tell a casual Gomens fan that A&C fuck dirty on the regular and it's inconceivable either of them would be ace, they'd look at you like you hadn't even watched the show or read the book.

1 year ago 2 0 1 0

And those people are the most likely to get defensive and lash out at dissenting opinions.

Because when you turn a character into an avatar of you, then completely normal pop culture critique, differing interpretations & character analysis feels like a personal attack.

1 year ago 2 0 1 0

Even that could be okay if the people had self-awareness.

But those people are so steeped to the brim of their own headcanons (and surrounded by a community that accepts headcanons and has its own fanon) that they have totally lost touch what a casual viewer would get from the show/movie.

The point where it becomes unhealthy to me is when people project SO HARD on a fictional character that their interpretation is no longer one anyone just watching the show/movie would ever understand or get just from the canon text. Where you have to be steeped in fanon to even understand it.

1 year ago 2 0 1 0

Yes. Tthere is totally nothing wrong with interpreting characters in ways that go against canon. Or changing your image of them to connect more with you as a person.

You just have to be AWARE that's what you're doing. And recognize you have no right to get angry at people who see things differently

1 year ago 3 1 1 0

Honestly it's the old fandom problem of some people hardcore identifying with characters and projecting onto them so hard that they become disconnected fundamentally from the canon text.

You can do this in a healthy way if you understand it is just you playing dolls with the characters.

1 year ago 2 1 1 0

My theory is that some people have kinkified them to the point where they've lost touch with canon. Headcanon has become canon to them.

And/or they are so attached to that kinky version/projected so hard that an ace reading feels like a personal attack or a condemnation of their sexual tastes..

1 year ago 3 0 2 0

It's absolutely wild and sort of bizarre how hostile some people are to an ace reading of A&C. What's especially weird about it is that it is the reading the most supported by canon!

1 year ago 4 0 1 0

Oh look, it's the reason I left the Gomens fandom.

1 year ago 3 0 1 0

Hmmm that's interesting! I do know that body chemistry plays a big role. Maybe it has something to do with that?

I would guess it's Eau de Parfum! When I was travelling. in France in my early twenties, we visited the Fragonard perfume factory.

I splurged on the tiniest bottle of parfum and it was so concentrated that when I wore it, I'd smell it on my pillow the next day or on my coat for up to a month.

I've got friends leaving FB who I don't follow elsewhere. I worry I'll lose them to the ether.

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

The one thing that worries me about people ditching FB is that there is currently no good alternative that does the same thing.

Decentralising and fragmenting communities is a bad thing for organising protests and staying informed.
