📌 Conclusion?
Public support of refugees is conditional.
👉 It depends on legal status, origin, and proximity
👉 And varies strongly across political ideologies
🧠 Citizens are not simply pro- or anti-refugees; they differentiate.
🏡 One of the findings went against our expectation: a reversal of the classic NIMBY effect.
➡️ People were more supportive of hosting refugees in their own municipality than elsewhere.
❗ Local proximity increased rather than decreased support.
✅ We find a clear hierarchy of support:
– Refugees > economic migrants
– Especially strong support for Ukrainians
We use survey experiments embedded in one of the surveys of the Centre d'Estudis d'Opinió (Catalan polling institute).
🔍 Respondents evaluated different groups:
– Refugees (Ukraine / Syria)
– Economic migrants (Belarus / Jordan)
📍 With settlement either locally or across the region
