Taking us back to a greater era, World War I, when we had a War Department, there were no women in combat, & more soldiers, sailors, & marines died of flu & pneumonia than died in combat.

You know who else famously used paid informants to infiltrate extremist groups?

The Justice Department.

Cancel the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Trump will be guest of honor at the “nerd prom,” with journalists serving as suck-ups

Journalists planning to honor Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner have a choice:
A. Party with the dictator, wear fancy clothes and network to boost their careers.
B. Stand up for democracy by staying home.
They’re going to choose A. It looks terrible now. It will look worse to history.

It’s utterly ludicrous and corrupt for any journalist to go to this event.

I have always been a big fan of Tim Cook, and likewise, Steve Jobs, but if Steve was not taken from the Planet Earth so young, and ran the company instead of Tim, the company would have done well, but nowhere near as well as it has under Tim. For me it began with a phone call from Tim at the beginning of my First Term. He had a fairly large problem that only I, as President, could fix. Most people would have paid millions of dollars to a consultant, who I probably would not have known, but who would say that he knew me well. The fees would be paid but the job would not have gotten done. When I got the call I said, wow, it’s Tim Apple (Cook!) calling, how big is that? I was very impressed with myself to have the head of Apple calling to “kiss my ass.” Anyway, he explained his problem, a tough one it was, I felt he was right and got it taken care of, quickly and effectively. That was the beginning of a long and very nice relationship. During my five years as President, Tim would call me, but never too much, and I would help him where I could. Years latter, after 3 or 4 BIG HELPS, I started to say to people, anyone who would listen, that this guy is an amazing manager and leader. He makes these calls to me, I help him out (but not always, because he will, on occasion, be too aggressive in his ask!), and he gets the job done, QUICKLY, without a dime being given to those very expensive (millions of dollars!) consultants around town who sometimes get it done, and sometimes don’t. Anyway, Tim Cook had an AMAZING career, almost incomparable, and will go on and continue to do great work for Apple, and whatever else he chooses to work on. Quite simply, Tim Cook is an incredible guy!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Trump has posted about Tim Cook. It is slightly unhinged. Somehow Cook retiring is all about Trump.

It’s not media cluelessness – it’s cowardice and complicity But there’s another word starting with “C” that describes some journalists: courage.

Journalists might've once had the excuse that the didn’t realize how bad MAGA extremism would be. But they can't plead cluelessness now. What’s left are cowardice, complicity and courage. Pick one.

Tim Cook donated $1M to Trump’s inauguration.

He fawned over Trump and gifted him a 24-karat gold plaque (as Apple lobbied for tariff exemptions).

Apple donated to Trump’s White House ballroom.

And it removed ICE tracking apps from its stores following a demand from the DOJ.

Remember this.

Did you know that Earth Day started with a document on environmental rights inspired by the Declaration of Independence, drafted by a college professor on a boat surveying the damage from a catastrophic oil spill? That & much more in today’s post! 🗃️ @hcrichardson.bsky.social

The eyewitness. How a prison fire and a charismatic inmate revealed a waiting audience for compelling radio news on CBS.

To mark the passing of CBS News Radio, I wrote about how it began—with a forgotten broadcast from a Black prison inmate.

I came across this incredible story while researching my biography of Edward R. Murrow, and you can read all about it @columjournreview.bsky.social. 🗃️

2/3. The biggest example of profiteering is of course the person Trump openly adores — Putin, from oil prices and the lifting of sanctions.

Traders placed over $1bn in perfectly timed bets on the Iran war. What is going on? Suspicious wagers on the US-Israel war in Iran are creating huge windfalls and raising concerns among lawmakers

1/3. And this is one more reason the war goes on in some form — people close to Trump are making money from it.

Random thought while reading a history of horse racing: I wonder if any spatially minded historians have explored the proximity of 19th century racetracks to urban stockyards. Some cities with close ones: Chicago, Washington, DC, and Pittsburgh.

This passive voice (“something has happened”; politics “has changed”), both sides, and abbreviated overview of political history offers a good example of how trying to appear fair-minded can be deeply misleading, as it shifts agency to universities by not mentioning the scope of the GOP attack.
